Cover Story (view full-size image): By taking soil moisture as a proxy in modelling, a neural network is designed to capture the impact factors of soil water storage capacity and their non-linear interaction in an implicit manner without knowing the underlying soil hydrologic processes. An internal vector of the proposed neural network assimilates the soil moisture response to meteorological conditions and is regulated as the profile of the soil water storage capacity. In contrast to static single value indicators, the profile vector can describe the amount of water that a soil can hold under various moisture levels over a range of time periods. The accuracy of radio-based positioning is heavily influenced by a dense multipath (DM) channel, leading to poor position accuracy. The DM affects both time of flight (ToF) measurements extracted from wideband (WB) signals—specifically, if the bandwidth is below 100 MHz—as well as received signal strength (RSS) measurements, due to the interference of multipath signal components onto the information-bearing line-of-sight (LoS) component. This work proposes an approach for combining these two different measurement technologies, leading to a robust position estimation in the presence of DM. We assume that a large ensemble of densely-spaced devices is to be positioned. We use RSS measurements to determine “clusters” of devices in the vicinity of each other. Joint processing of the WB measurements from all devices in a cluster efficiently suppresses the influence of the DM. We formulate an algorithmic approach for the information fusion of the two technologies and derive the corresponding Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) to gain insight into the performance trade-offs at hand. We evaluate our results by simulations and validate the approach with real-world measurement data. The results show that the clustering approach can halve the root-mean-square error (RMSE) from about 2 m to below 1 m, using WB signal transmissions in the 2.4 GHz ISM band at a bandwidth of about 80 MHz. The complex backgrounds of satellite videos and serious interference from noise and pseudo-motion targets make it difficult to detect and track moving vehicles. Recently, researchers have proposed road-based constraints to remove background interference and achieve highly accurate detection and tracking. However, existing methods for constructing road constraints suffer from poor stability, low arithmetic performance, leakage, and error detection. In response, this study proposes a method for detecting and tracking moving vehicles in satellite videos based on the constraints from spatiotemporal characteristics (DTSTC), fusing road masks from the spatial domain with motion heat maps from the temporal domain. The detection precision is enhanced by increasing the contrast in the constrained area to accurately detect moving vehicles. Vehicle tracking is achieved by completing an inter-frame vehicle association using position and historical movement information. The method was tested at various stages, and the results show that the proposed method outperformed the traditional method in constructing constraints, correct detection rate, false detection rate, and missed detection rate. The tracking phase performed well in identity retention capability and tracking accuracy. Therefore, DTSTC is robust for detecting moving vehicles in satellite videos. Full article

This paper presents a method for the identification of control-related signal paths dedicated to a semi-active suspension with MR (magnetorheological) dampers, which are installed in place of standard shock absorbers. The main challenge comes from the fact that the semi-active suspension needs to be simultaneously subjected to road-induced excitation and electric currents supplied to the suspension MR dampers, while a response signal needs to be decomposed into road-related and control-related components. During experiments, the front wheels of an all-terrain vehicle were subjected to sinusoidal vibration excitation at a frequency equal to 12 Hz using a dedicated diagnostic station and specialised mechanical exciters. The harmonic type of road-related excitation allowed for its straightforward filtering from identification signals. Additionally, front suspension MR dampers were controlled using a wideband random signal with a 25 Hz bandwidth, different realisations, and several configurations, which differed in the average values and deviations of control currents. The simultaneous control of the right and left suspension MR dampers made it necessary to decompose the vehicle vibration response, i.e., the front vehicle body acceleration signal, into components related to the forces generated by different MR dampers. Measurement signals used for identification were taken from numerous sensors available in the vehicle, e.g., accelerometers, suspension force and deflection sensors, and sensors of electric currents, which control the instantaneous damping parameters of MR dampers. The final identification was carried out for control-related models evaluated in the frequency domain and revealed several resonances of the vehicle response and their dependence on the configurations of control currents. In addition, the parameters of the vehicle model with MR dampers and the diagnostic station were estimated based on the identification results. The analysis of the simulation results of the implemented vehicle model carried out in the frequency domain showed the influence of the vehicle load on the absolute values and phase shifts of control-related signal paths. The potential future application of the identified models lies in the synthesis and implementation of adaptive suspension control algorithms such as FxLMS (filtered-x least mean square). Adaptive vehicle suspensions are especially preferred for their ability to quickly adapt to varying road conditions and vehicle parameters. Full article

Background: Healthcare workers make up one of the occupations in the United States that experience the most musculoskeletal injuries. These injuries are often related to the movement and repositioning of patients. Despite previous injury prevention attempts, injury rates remain at an unsustainable level. The purpose of this proof-of-concept study is to provide preliminary testing of the impact of a lifting intervention on common biomechanical risk factors for injury during high-risk patient movements.; Methods: A before-and-after (quasi-experimental) design was utilized to compare biomechanical risk factors before and after a lifting intervention. Kinematic data were collected using the Xsens motion capture system, while muscle activations were collected with the Delsys Trigno EMG system. Results: Improvements were noted in the lever arm distance, trunk velocity, and muscle activations during the movements following the intervention; Conclusions: The contextual lifting intervention shows a positive impact on the biomechanical risk factors for musculoskeletal injury among healthcare workers without increasing the biomechanical risk. A larger, prospective study is needed to determine the intervention’s ability to reduce injuries among healthcare workers. Full article

Defect inspection is important to ensure consistent quality and efficiency in industrial manufacturing. Recently, machine vision systems integrating artificial intelligence (AI)-based inspection algorithms have exhibited promising performance in various applications, but practically, they often suffer from data imbalance. This paper proposes a defect inspection method using a one-class classification (OCC) model to deal with imbalanced datasets. A two-stream network architecture consisting of global and local feature extractor networks is presented, which can alleviate the representation collapse problem of OCC. By combining an object-oriented invariant feature vector with a training-data-oriented local feature vector, the proposed two-stream network model prevents the decision boundary from collapsing to the training dataset and obtains an appropriate decision boundary. The performance of the proposed model is demonstrated in the practical application of automotive-airbag bracket-welding defect inspection. The effects of the classification layer and two-stream network architecture on the overall inspection accuracy were clarified by using image samples collected in a controlled laboratory environment and from a production site. The results are compared with those of a previous classification model, demonstrating that the proposed model can improve the accuracy, precision, and F1 score by up to 8.19%, 10.74%, and 4.02%, respectively. Intelligent driver assistance systems are becoming increasingly popular in modern passenger vehicles. A crucial component of intelligent vehicles is the ability to detect vulnerable road users (VRUs) for an early and safe response. However, standard imaging sensors perform poorly in conditions of strong illumination contrast, such as approaching a tunnel or at night, due to their dynamic range limitations. In this paper, we focus on the use of high-dynamic-range (HDR) imaging sensors in vehicle perception systems and the subsequent need for tone mapping of the acquired data into a standard 8-bit representation. To our knowledge, no previous studies have evaluated the impact of tone mapping on object detection performance. We investigate the potential for optimizing HDR tone mapping to achieve a natural image appearance while facilitating object detection of state-of-the-art detectors designed for standard dynamic range (SDR) images. Our proposed approach relies on a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) that tone maps HDR video frames into a standard 8-bit representation. We introduce a novel training approach called detection-informed tone mapping (DI-TM) and evaluate its performance with respect to its effectiveness and robustness in various scene conditions, as well as its performance relative to an existing state-of-the-art tone mapping method. The results show that the proposed DI-TM method achieves the best results in terms of detection performance metrics in challenging dynamic range conditions, while both methods perform well in typical, non-challenging conditions. In challenging conditions, our method improves the detection F2 score by 13%. Compared to SDR images, the increase in F2 score is 49%. Full article

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are used for improving traffic efficiency and road safety. However, VANETs are vulnerable to various attacks from malicious vehicles. Malicious vehicles can disrupt the normal operation of VANET applications by broadcasting bogus event messages that may cause accidents, threatening people’s lives. Therefore, the receiver node needs to evaluate the authenticity and trustworthiness of the sender vehicles and their messages before acting. Although several solutions for trust management in VANETs have been proposed to address these issues of malicious vehicles, existing trust management schemes have two main issues. Firstly, these schemes have no authentication components and assume the nodes are authenticated before communicating. Consequently, these schemes do not meet VANET security and privacy requirements. Secondly, existing trust management schemes are not designed to operate in various contexts of VANETs that occur frequently due to sudden variations in the network dynamics, making existing solutions impractical for VANETs. In this paper, we present a novel blockchain-assisted privacy-preserving and context-aware trust management framework that combines a blockchain-assisted privacy-preserving authentication scheme and a context-aware trust management scheme for securing communications in VANETs. The authentication scheme is proposed to enable anonymous and mutual authentication of vehicular nodes and their messages and meet VANET efficiency, security, and privacy requirements. The context-aware trust management scheme is proposed to evaluate the trustworthiness of the sender vehicles and their messages, and successfully detect malicious vehicles and their false/bogus messages and eliminate them from the network, thereby ensuring safe, secure, and efficient communications in VANETs. In contrast to existing trust schemes, the proposed framework can operate and adapt to various contexts/scenarios in VANETs while meeting all VANET security and privacy requirements. According to efficiency analysis and simulation results, the proposed framework outperforms the baseline schemes and demonstrates to be secure, effective, and robust for enhancing vehicular communication security. The number of vehicles equipped with radars on the road has been increasing for years and is expected to reach 50% of cars by 2030. This rapid rise in radars will likely increase the risk of harmful interference, especially since radar specifications from standardization bodies (e.g., ETSI) provide requirements in terms of maximum transmit power but do no mandate specific radar waveform parameters nor channel access scheme policies. Techniques for interference mitigation are thus becoming very important to ensure the long-term correct operation of radars and upper-layer ADAS systems that depend on them in this complex environment. In our previous work, we have shown that organizing the radar band into time-frequency resources that do not interfere with each other vastly reduces the amount of interference by facilitating band sharing. In this paper, a metaheuristic is presented to find the optimal resource sharing between radars, knowing their relative positions and thereby the line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight interference risks during a realistic scenario. The metaheuristic aims at optimally minimizing interference while minimizing the number of resource changes that radars have to make. It is a centralized approach where everything about the system is known (e.g., the past and future positions of the vehicles). This and the high computational load induce that this algorithm is not meant to be used in real-time. However, the metaheuristic approach can be extremely useful for finding near optimal solutions in simulations, allowing for the extraction of efficient patterns, or as data generation for machine learning. Rolling noise is a significant contributor to railway noise. Wheel and rail roughness are decisive for the emitted noise level. An optical measurement method installed on a moving train is suitable for closer monitoring of the rail surface condition. A measurement setup based on the chord method requires the sensors to be positioned in a straight line along the direction of measurement and in a stable lateral position. Measurements should always be performed within the shiny and uncorroded running surface, even when there are lateral movements of the train. In this study, concepts for the detection of the running surface and the compensation of lateral movements are investigated in a laboratory setting. The setup consists of a vertical lathe with a ring-shaped workpiece that incorporates an implemented artificial running surface. The detection of the running surface based on laser triangulation sensors and a laser profilometer is investigated. It is shown that the running surface can be detected using a laser profilometer that measures the intensity of the reflected laser light. It is possible to detect the lateral position and the width of the running surface. A linear positioning system is proposed to adjust the lateral position of the sensors based on the running surface detection of the laser profilometer. When the lateral position of the measuring sensor is disturbed by a movement with a wavelength of 18.85 m, the linear positioning system can keep the laser triangulation sensor inside the running surface for 98.44% of the measured data points at a velocity of approximately 7.5 km h1. The mean positioning error is 1.40 mm. By implementing the proposed system on the train, future studies can be conducted to examine the lateral position of the running surface as a function of the various operational parameters of the train. In this note, the feasibility of initial alignment of a gyro-free inertial navigation system (GF-INS) is investigated. Initial roll and initial pitch are obtained using leveling of conventional INS since centripetal acceleration is very small. The equation for the initial heading cannot be used since the GF inertial measurement unit (IMU) cannot directly measure the Earth rate. A new equation is derived to obtain the initial heading from GF-IMU accelerometer outputs. Initial heading is expressed in the accelerometer outputs of two configurations, which satisfies a specific condition among 15 GF-IMU configurations presented in the literature. The initial heading error to arrangement and accelerometer error is quantitatively analyzed from the initial heading calculation equation of GF-INS and the initial heading error analysis of the general INS. The initial heading error is investigated when gyroscopes are used with GF-IMU. The results show that the initial heading error depends more on the performance of the gyroscope than that of the accelerometer, and the initial heading cannot be obtained within a practical error level by using only GF-IMU, even when an extremely accurate accelerometer is used. Therefore, aiding sensors have to be used in order to have a practical initial heading. Full article

Safety plays a key role in human–robot interactions in collaborative robot (cobot) applications. This paper provides a general procedure to guarantee safe workstations allowing human operations, robot contributions, the dynamical environment, and time-variant objects in a set of collaborative robotic tasks. The proposed methodology focuses on the contribution and the mapping of reference frames. Multiple reference frame representation agents are defined at the same time by considering egocentric, allocentric, and route-centric perspectives. The agents are processed to provide a minimal and effective assessment of the ongoing human–robot interactions. The proposed formulation is based on the generalization and proper synthesis of multiple cooperating reference frame agents at the same time. Accordingly, it is possible to achieve a real-time assessment of the safety-related implications through the implementation and fast calculation of proper safety-related quantitative indices. This allows us to define and promptly regulate the controlling parameters of the involved cobot without velocity limitations that are recognized as the main disadvantage. A set of experiments has been realized and investigated to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the research by using a seven-DOF anthropomorphic arm in combination with a psychometric test. The acquired results agree with the current literature in terms of the kinematic, position, and velocity aspects; use measurement methods based on tests provided to the operator; and introduce novel features of work cell arranging, including the use of virtual instrumentation. Finally, the associated analytical–topological treatments have enabled the development of a safe and comfortable measure to the human–robot relation with satisfactory experimental results compared to previous research. Nevertheless, the robot posture, human perception, and learning technologies would have to apply research from multidisciplinary fields such as psychology, gesture, communication, and social sciences in order to be prepared for positioning in real-world applications that offer new challenges for cobot applications. Breast cancer patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) require precise and accurate evaluation of treatment response. Residual cancer burden (RCB) is a prognostic tool widely used to estimate survival outcomes in breast cancer. In this study, we introduced a machine-learning-based optical biosensor called the Opti-scan probe to assess residual cancer burden in breast cancer patients undergoing NAC. The Opti-scan probe data were acquired from 15 patients (mean age: 61.8 years) before and after each cycle of NAC. Using regression analysis with k-fold cross-validation, we calculated the optical properties of healthy and unhealthy breast tissues. The ML predictive model was trained on the optical parameter values and breast cancer imaging features obtained from the Opti-scan probe data to calculate RCB values. The results show that the ML model achieved a high accuracy of 0.98 in predicting RCB number/class based on the changes in optical properties measured by the Opti-scan probe. These findings suggest that our ML-based Opti-scan probe has considerable potential as a valuable tool for the assessment of breast cancer response after NAC and to guide treatment decisions. Therefore, it could be a promising, non-invasive, and accurate method for monitoring breast cancer patient’s response to NAC. Full article

In a system where wind farms are connected to the grid via a bipolar flexible DC transmission, the occurrence of a short-time fault at one of the poles results in the active power emitted by the wind farm being transmitted through the non-faulty pole. This condition leads to an overcurrent in the DC system, thereby causing the wind turbine to disconnect from the grid. Addressing this issue, this paper presents a novel coordinated fault ride-through strategy for flexible DC transmission systems and wind farms, which eliminates the need for additional communication equipment. The proposed strategy leverages the power characteristics of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) under different terminal voltage conditions. By considering the safety constraints of both the wind turbine and the DC system, as well as optimizing the active power output during wind farm faults, the strategy establishes guidelines for the wind farm bus voltage and the crowbar switch signal. Moreover, it harnesses the power regulation capability of the DFIG rotor-side crowbar circuit to enable fault ride-through in the presence of single-pole short-time faults in the DC system. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed coordinated control strategy effectively mitigates overcurrent in the non-faulty pole of flexible DC transmission during fault conditions. The complexity of the underwater environment enables significant energy consumption of sensor nodes for communication with base stations in underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs), and the energy consumption of nodes in different water depths is unbalanced. How to improve the energy efficiency of sensor nodes and meanwhile balance the energy consumption of nodes in different water depths in UWSNs are thus urgent concerns. Therefore, in this paper, we first propose a novel hierarchical underwater wireless sensor transmission (HUWST) framework. We then propose a game-based, energy-efficient underwater communication mechanism in the presented HUWST. It improves the energy efficiency of the underwater sensors personalized according to the various water depth layers of sensor locations. In particular, we integrate the economic game theory in our mechanism to trade off variations in communication energy consumption due to sensors in different water depth layers. Mathematically, the optimal mechanism is formulated as a complex nonlinear integer programming (NIP) problem. A new energy-efficient distributed data transmission mode decision algorithm (E-DDTMD) based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is thus further proposed to tackle this sophisticated NIP problem. The systematic simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our mechanism in improving the energy efficiency of UWSNs. Moreover, our presented E-DDTMD algorithm achieves significantly superior performance to the baseline schemes. Full article

Point cloud registration plays a crucial role in 3D mapping and localization. Urban scene point clouds pose significant challenges for registration due to their large data volume, similar scenarios, and dynamic objects. Estimating the location by instances (bulidings, traffic lights, etc.) in urban scenes is a more humanized matter. In this paper, we propose PCRMLP (point cloud registration MLP), a novel model for urban scene point cloud registration that achieves comparable registration performance to prior learning-based methods. Compared to previous works that focused on extracting features and estimating correspondence, PCRMLP estimates transformation implicitly from concrete instances. The key innovation lies in the instance-level urban scene representation method, which leverages semantic segmentation and density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) to generate instance descriptors, enabling robust feature extraction, dynamic object filtering, and logical transformation estimation. Then, a lightweight network consisting of Multilayer Perceptrons (MLPs) is employed to obtain transformation in an encoder–decoder manner. Experimental validation on the KITTI dataset demonstrates that PCRMLP achieves satisfactory coarse transformation estimates from instance descriptors within a remarkable time of 0.0028 s. With the incorporation of an ICP refinement module, our proposed method outperforms prior learning-based approaches, yielding a rotation error of 2.01° and a translation error of 1.58 m. The experimental results highlight PCRMLP’s potential for coarse registration of urban scene point clouds, thereby paving the way for its application in instance-level semantic mapping and localization. In recent years, point cloud-based 3D object detection has seen tremendous success. Previous point-based methods use Set Abstraction (SA) to sample the key points and abstract their features, which did not fully take density variation into consideration in point sampling and feature extraction. The SA module can be split into three parts: point sampling, grouping and feature extraction. Previous sampling methods focus more on distances among points in Euclidean space or feature space, ignoring the point density, thus making it more likely to sample points in Ground Truth (GT) containing dense points. Furthermore, the feature extraction module takes the relative coordinates and point features as input, while raw point coordinates can represent more informative attributes, i.e., point density and direction angle. So, this paper proposes Density-aware Semantics-Augmented Set Abstraction (DSASA) for solving the above two issues, which takes a deep look at the point density in the sampling process and enhances point features using onefold raw point coordinates. We conduct the experiments on the KITTI dataset and verify the superiority of DSASA. Full article

Adaptive AI for context and activity recognition remains a relatively unexplored field due to difficulty in collecting sufficient information to develop supervised models. Additionally, building a dataset for human context activities “in the wild” demands time and human resources, which explains the lack of public datasets available. Some of the available datasets for activity recognition were collected using wearable sensors, since they are less invasive than images and precisely capture a user’s movements in time series. However, frequency series contain more information about sensors’ signals. In this paper, we investigate the use of feature engineering to improve the performance of a Deep Learning model. Thus, we propose using Fast Fourier Transform algorithms to extract features from frequency series instead of time series. We evaluated our approach on the ExtraSensory and WISDM datasets. The results show that using Fast Fourier Transform algorithms to extract features performed better than using statistics measures to extract features from temporal series. Additionally, we examined the impact of individual sensors on identifying specific labels and proved that incorporating more sensors enhances the model’s effectiveness. On the ExtraSensory dataset, the use of frequency features outperformed that of time-domain features by 8.9 p.p., 0.2 p.p., 39.5 p.p., and 0.4 p.p. in Standing, Sitting, Lying Down, and Walking activities, respectively, and on the WISDM dataset, the model performance improved by 1.7 p.p., just by using feature engineering. This study highlights hyperspectral infrared observations from the Marine-Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (M-AERI) collected as part of the Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Mobile Facility (AMF) deployment on the icebreaker RV Polarstern during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition from October 2019 to September 2020. The ARM M-AERI directly measures the infrared radiance emission spectrum between 520 cm−1 and 3000 cm−1 (19.2–3.3 μm) at 0.5 cm−1 spectral resolution. These ship-based observations provide a valuable set of radiance data for the modeling of snow/ice infrared emission as well as validation data for the assessment of satellite soundings. Remote sensing using hyperspectral infrared observations provides valuable information on sea surface properties (skin temperature and infrared emissivity), near-surface air temperature, and temperature lapse rate in the lowest kilometer. Comparison of the M-AERI observations with those from the DOE ARM meteorological tower and downlooking infrared thermometer are generally in good agreement with some notable differences. Operational satellite soundings from the NOAA-20 satellite were also assessed using ARM radiosondes launched from the RV Polarstern and measurements of the infrared snow surface emission from the M-AERI showing reasonable agreement. Driven by technological advances from Industry 4.0, Healthcare 4.0 synthesizes medical sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, the Internet of things (IoT), machine learning, and augmented reality (AR) to transform the healthcare sector. Healthcare 4.0 creates a smart health network by connecting patients, medical devices, hospitals, clinics, medical suppliers, and other healthcare-related components. Body chemical sensor and biosensor networks (BSNs) provide the necessary platform for Healthcare 4.0 to collect various medical data from patients. BSN is the foundation of Healthcare 4.0 in raw data detection and information collecting. This paper proposes a BSN architecture with chemical sensors and biosensors to detect and communicate physiological measurements of human bodies. These measurement data help healthcare professionals to monitor patient vital signs and other medical conditions. The collected data facilitates disease diagnosis and injury detection at an early stage. Our work further formulates the problem of sensor deployment in BSNs as a mathematical model. This model includes parameter and constraint sets to describe patient body characteristics, BSN sensor features, as well as biomedical readout requirements. The proposed model’s performance is evaluated by multiple sets of simulations on different parts of the human body. Simulations are designed to represent typical BSN applications in Healthcare 4.0. Simulation results demonstrate the impact of various biofactors and measurement time on sensor selections and readout performance. Full article

To solve the problems of poor stability and low monitoring precision in the online detection of rice moisture in the drying tower, we designed an online detection device for rice moisture at the outlet of the drying tower. The structure of a tri-plate capacitor was adopted, and the electrostatic field of the tri-plate capacitor was simulated using COMSOL software. A central composite design of three factors and five levels was carried out with the thickness, spacing, and area of the plates as the influencing factors and the capacitance-specific sensitivity as the test index. This device was composed of a dynamic acquisition device and a detection system. The dynamic sampling device was found to achieve dynamic continuous sampling and static intermittent measurements of rice using a ten-shaped leaf plate structure. The hardware circuit of the inspection system with STM32F407ZGT6 as the main control chip was designed to realize stable communication between the master and slave computers. Additionally, an optimized BP neural network prediction model based on the genetic algorithm was established using the MATLAB software. Indoor static and dynamic verification tests were also carried out. The results showed that the optimal plate structure parameter combination includes a plate thickness of 1 mm, plate spacing of 100 mm, and relative area of 18,000.069 mm2 while satisfying the mechanical design and practical application needs of the device. The structure of the BP neural network was 2-90-1, the length of individual code in the genetic algorithm was 361, and the prediction model was trained 765 times to obtain a minimum MSE value of 1.9683 × 10−5, which was lower than that of the unoptimized BP neural network with an MSE of 7.1215 × 10−4. The mean relative error of the device was 1.44% under the static test and 2.103% under the dynamic test, which met the accuracy requirements for the design of the device. Full article

Cardiovascular diseases kill 18 million people each year. Currently, a patient’s health is assessed only during clinical visits, which are often infrequent and provide little information on the person’s health during daily life. Advances in mobile health technologies have allowed for the continuous monitoring of indicators of health and mobility during daily life by wearable and other devices. The ability to obtain such longitudinal, clinically relevant measurements could enhance the prevention, detection and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of various methods for monitoring patients with cardiovascular disease during daily life using wearable devices. We specifically discuss three distinct monitoring domains: physical activity monitoring, indoor home monitoring and physiological parameter monitoring. Full article

Identifying lane markings is a key technology in assisted driving and autonomous driving. The traditional sliding window lane detection algorithm has good detection performance in straight lanes and curves with small curvature, but its detection and tracking performance is poor in curves with larger curvature. Large curvature curves are common scenes in traffic roads. Therefore, in response to the problem of poor lane detection performance of traditional sliding window lane detection algorithms in large curvature curves, this article improves the traditional sliding window algorithm and proposes a sliding window lane detection calculation method, which integrates steering wheel angle sensors and binocular cameras. When a vehicle first enters a bend, the curvature of the bend is not significant. Traditional sliding window algorithms can effectively detect the lane line of the bend and provide angle input to the steering wheel, enabling the vehicle to travel along the lane line. However, as the curvature of the curve increases, traditional sliding window lane detection algorithms cannot track lane lines well. Considering that the steering wheel angle of the car does not change much during the adjacent sampling time of the video, the steering wheel angle of the previous frame can be used as input for the lane detection algorithm of the next frame. By using the steering wheel angle information, the search center of each sliding window can be predicted. If the number of white pixels within the rectangular range centered around the search center is greater than the threshold, the average of the horizontal coordinate values of these white pixels will be used as the horizontal coordinate value of the sliding window center. Otherwise, the search center will be used as the center of the sliding window. A binocular camera is used to assist in locating the position of the first sliding window. The simulation and experimental results show that compared with traditional sliding window lane detection algorithms, the improved algorithm can better recognize and track lane lines with large curvature in bends. (1) Background: Mastery of auscultation can be challenging for many healthcare providers. Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered digital support is emerging as an aid to assist with the interpretation of auscultated sounds. A few AI-augmented digital stethoscopes exist but none are dedicated to pediatrics. Our goal was to develop a digital auscultation platform for pediatric medicine. (2) Methods: We developed StethAid—a digital platform for artificial intelligence-assisted auscultation and telehealth in pediatrics—that consists of a wireless digital stethoscope, mobile applications, customized patient-provider portals, and deep learning algorithms. To validate the StethAid platform, we characterized our stethoscope and used the platform in two clinical applications: (1) Still’s murmur identification and (2) wheeze detection. The platform has been deployed in four children’s medical centers to build the first and largest pediatric cardiopulmonary datasets, to our knowledge. We have trained and tested deep-learning models using these datasets. (3) Results: The frequency response of the StethAid stethoscope was comparable to those of the commercially available Eko Core, Thinklabs One, and Littman 3200 stethoscopes. The labels provided by our expert physician offline were in concordance with the labels of providers at the bedside using their acoustic stethoscopes for 79.3% of lungs cases and 98.3% of heart cases. Our deep learning algorithms achieved high sensitivity and specificity for both Still’s murmur identification (sensitivity of 91.9% and specificity of 92.6%) and wheeze detection (sensitivity of 83.7% and specificity of 84.4%). (4) Conclusions: Our team has created a technically and clinically validated pediatric digital AI-enabled auscultation platform. Use of our platform could improve efficacy and efficiency of clinical care for pediatric patients, reduce parental anxiety, and result in cost savings. Full article

Optical neural networks can effectively address hardware constraints and parallel computing efficiency issues inherent in electronic neural networks. However, the inability to implement convolutional neural networks at the all-optical level remains a hurdle. In this work, we propose an optical diffractive convolutional neural network (ODCNN) that is capable of performing image processing tasks in computer vision at the speed of light. We explore the application of the 4f system and the diffractive deep neural network (D2NN) in neural networks. ODCNN is then simulated by combining the 4f system as an optical convolutional layer and the diffractive networks. We also examine the potential impact of nonlinear optical materials on this network. Numerical simulation results show that the addition of convolutional layers and nonlinear functions improves the classification accuracy of the network. We believe that the proposed ODCNN model can be the basic architecture for building optical convolutional networks. Full article

An innovative optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR)-based distributed temperature sensing method is proposed that utilizes a Rayleigh backscattering enhanced fiber (RBEF) as the sensing medium. The RBEF features randomly high backscattering points; the analysis of the fiber position shift of these points before and after the temperature change along the fiber is achieved using the sliding cross-correlation method. The fiber position and temperature variation can be accurately demodulated by calibrating the mathematical relationship between the high backscattering point position along the RBEF and the temperature variation. Experimental results reveal a linear relationship between temperature variation and the total position displacement of high backscattering points. The temperature sensing sensitivity coefficient is 7.814 μm/(m·°C), with an average relative error temperature measurement of −1.12% and positioning error as low as 0.02 m for the temperature-influenced fiber segment. In the proposed demodulation method, the spatial resolution of temperature sensing is determined by the distribution of high backscattering points. The temperature sensing resolution depends on the spatial resolution of the OFDR system and the length of the temperature-influenced fiber. With an OFDR system spatial resolution of 12.5 μm, the temperature sensing resolution reaches 0.418 °C per meter of RBEF under test. Full article

Robust and Efficient Authentication and Group–Proof Scheme Using Physical Unclonable Functions for Wearable Computing

Wearable computing has garnered a lot of attention due to its various advantages, including automatic recognition and categorization of human actions from sensor data. However, wearable computing environments can be fragile to cyber security attacks since adversaries attempt to block, delete, or intercept the exchanged information via insecure communication channels. In addition to cyber security attacks, wearable sensor devices cannot resist physical threats since they are batched in unattended circumstances. Furthermore, existing schemes are not suited for resource-constrained wearable sensor devices with regard to communication and computational costs and are inefficient regarding the verification of multiple sensor devices simultaneously. Thus, we designed an efficient and robust authentication and group–proof scheme using physical unclonable functions (PUFs) for wearable computing, denoted as AGPS-PUFs, to provide high-security and cost-effective efficiency compared to the previous schemes. We evaluated the security of the AGPS-PUF using a formal security analysis, including the ROR Oracle model and AVISPA. We carried out the testbed experiments using MIRACL on Raspberry PI4 and then presented a comparative analysis of the performance between the AGPS-PUF scheme and the previous schemes. Consequently, the AGPS-PUF offers superior security and efficiency than existing schemes and can be applied to practical wearable computing environments. Full article

Planar fiducial markers are commonly used to estimate a pose of a camera relative to the marker. This information can be combined with other sensor data to provide a global or local position estimate of the system in the environment using a state estimator such as the Kalman filter. To achieve accurate estimates, the observation noise covariance matrix must be properly configured to reflect the sensor output’s characteristics. However, the observation noise of the pose obtained from planar fiducial markers varies across the measurement range and this fact needs to be taken into account during the sensor fusion to provide a reliable estimate. In this work, we present experimental measurements of the fiducial markers in real and simulation scenarios for 2D pose estimation. Based on these measurements, we propose analytical functions that approximate the variances of pose estimates. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in a 2D robot localisation experiment, where we present a method for estimating covariance model parameters based on user measurements and a technique for fusing pose estimates from multiple markers. In the ultrasonic welding system, the ultrasonic power supply drives the piezoelectric transducer to work in the resonant state to realize the conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy. In order to obtain stable ultrasonic energy and ensure welding quality, this paper designs a driving power supply based on an improved LC matching network with two functions, frequency tracking and power regulation. First, in order to analyze the dynamic branch of the piezoelectric transducer, we propose an improved LC matching network, in which three voltage RMS values are used to analyze the dynamic branch and discriminate the series resonant frequency. Further, the driving power system is designed using the three RMS voltage values as feedback. A fuzzy control method is used for frequency tracking. The double closed-loop control method of the power outer loop and the current inner loop is used for power regulation. Through MATLAB software simulation and experimental testing, it is verified that the power supply can effectively track the series resonant frequency and control the power while being continuously adjustable. This study has promising applications in ultrasonic welding technology with complex loads. Full article

The measurement of physiologic pressure helps diagnose and prevent associated health complications. From typical conventional methods to more complicated modalities, such as the estimation of intracranial pressures, numerous invasive and noninvasive tools that provide us with insight into daily physiology and aid in understanding pathology are within our grasp. Currently, our standards for estimating vital pressures, including continuous BP measurements, pulmonary capillary wedge pressures, and hepatic portal gradients, involve the use of invasive modalities. As an emerging field in medical technology, artificial intelligence (AI) has been incorporated into analyzing and predicting patterns of physiologic pressures. AI has been used to construct models that have clinical applicability both in hospital settings and at-home settings for ease of use for patients. Studies applying AI to each of these compartmental pressures were searched and shortlisted for thorough assessment and review. There are several AI-based innovations in noninvasive blood pressure estimation based on imaging, auscultation, oscillometry and wearable technology employing biosignals. The purpose of this review is to provide an in-depth assessment of the involved physiologies, prevailing methodologies and emerging technologies incorporating AI in clinical practice for each type of compartmental pressure measurement. We also bring to the forefront AI-based noninvasive estimation techniques for physiologic pressure based on microwave systems that have promising potential for clinical practice. Full article

A novel optimal control problem is considered for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) stochastic systems with mixed parameter drift, external disturbance and observation noise. The proposed controller can not only track and identify the drift parameters in finite time but, furthermore, drive the system to move towards the desired trajectory. However, there is a conflict between control and estimation, which makes the analytic solution unattainable in most situations. A dual control algorithm based on weight factor and innovation is, therefore, proposed. First, the innovation is added to the control goal by the appropriate weight and the Kalman filter is introduced to estimate and track the transformed drift parameters. The weight factor is used to adjust the degree of drift parameter estimation in order to achieve a balance between control and estimation. Then, the optimal control is derived by solving the modified optimization problem. In this strategy, the analytic solution of the control law can be obtained. The control law obtained in this paper is optimal because the estimation of drift parameters is integrated into the objective function rather than the suboptimal control law, which includes two parts of control and estimation in other studies. The proposed algorithm can achieve the best compromise between optimization and estatimation. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by numerical experiments in two different cases.
