Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Polymer-based materials play an important role in dentistry, with a wide variety of applications, including direct restorative procedures, prosthodontics, orthodontics, and implantology. Polymers have also been used to manufacture scaffolds, with a role in tissue regeneration, and as drug delivery systems in treating various oral pathologies.

The high versatility of polymers for dental applications, associated with the wide variety of available materials and digital workflow, has resulted in the most advanced manufacturing technology: 3D printing. Three-dimensional printing application in dentistry enables the manufacturing of patient specific devices and tissue constructs, with predictable lower costs and rapid turnaround times.

Four-dimensional printing, which includes “time” as the fourth dimension, has also had a good impact in dentistry. Dynamic and adaptable shape memory polymers and hydrogels have proven their efficiency in the oral environment, which is characterized by continuously changing thermal and humidity conditions.

The future research in this field will likely include the possibility of producing a whole tooth that is capable of being harmoniously integrated with the surrounding periodontium.

This Special Issue aims to focus on the advances and future trends in this attractive field of research, encouraging a comprehensive approach to the subject. Research papers and reviews are welcome.
