Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Hypertension (HTN) is a prevalent and significant health condition with a huge burden on public health. The pathogenesis of HTN is multifactorial, but some of the major risk factors are clearly driven by modern lifestyle. Among them, diet and nutrition are solid contributors, as has been well known for a long time. Salt was linked to the development of hypertension as early as the beginning of the 20th century. Dietary interventions for HTN treatment were conducted in the early 1940s. The DASH trail is probably the most famous; it demonstrated how dietary modification can affect blood pressure. However, despite extensive investigation, the underlying mechanisms are far from being completely understood. Lately, new pathological processes, such as inflammation and oxidative stress, have been established as implicated in the pathogenesis of HTN. In addition, in diseases that are diet dependent, the interaction between gut microbiota and the host metabolism plays a significant role. All of the above, and much more, may open new and exciting horizons for better understanding the interplay between nutrition and HTN.

In this Special Issue of Nutrients, we will accept excellent papers from any discipline, including basic science, behavioral interventions, population-based data, etc., that can contribute new insights to the field of nutrition and HTN.
