Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recent evidence has associated exposure to endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDC) with metabolic and hormone-dependent disorders. One of the main concerns of the use of EDC is their ability to interfere with the endocrine system, by integrative and complex pathways of the hormones' mode of action. Different observations suggested that these environmental contaminants (bisphenol A, organochlorines, polybrominated flame retardants, perfluorinated substances, alkylphenols, phthalates, UVB-filters, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, alkylphenols) may be related with the development of cancer, diabetes, obesity, the metabolic syndrome, thyroid and fertility disorders. Furthermore, most of these compounds are ubiquitous in the environment, due to their use in everyday life products, like for example pesticides, plasticizers, solvents, and some household products including cleaning products, air fresheners, hair dyes, cosmetics, and sunscreens. Thus, it is pertinent to establish the association between human exposure to these compounds and the exponential increase in metabolic and hormone-dependent disorders, from prenatal to old age. This Special Issue intends to contribute to the clinical advancement for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these pathologies associated with the lifestyle habits of modern populations.

Cell Adhesion Molecules in Schizophrenia Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a common comorbidity of schizophrenia and significantly shortens life expectancy of the patients. Intercellular (ICAM), vascular (VCAM), and neural (NCAM) cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) mediate neuroinflammatory processes, and their soluble forms (e.g., sICAM) in plasma are present in parallel with their cell-bound forms. In this study, their serum levels were examined in 211 white Siberian patients with paranoid schizophrenia (82 patients with and 129 without MetS according to the 2005 International Diabetes Federation criteria). Serum levels of CAMs were determined with Magpix and Luminex 200 (Luminex, Austin, TX, USA) using xMAP Technology. The level of sICAM-1 was significantly higher and that of sVCAM-1 significantly lower in patients with MetS compared to patients without MetS. Levels of NCAM did not differ between the groups. More pronounced Spearman’s correlations between CAMs, age, duration of schizophrenia, and body–mass index were observed among patients without MetS than among patients with MetS. Our results are consistent with MetS’s being associated with endothelial dysfunction along with other components of inflammation. Through these endothelial components of peripheral inflammatory processes, MetS might induce intracerebral neuroinflammatory changes, but further investigation is needed to confirm this. Full article

The Association of Peptide Hormones with Glycemia, Dyslipidemia, and Obesity in Lebanese Individuals

Peptide-hormones, including pancreatic peptide-YY(PYY), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), cholecystokinin (CCK), insulin, and leptin function as satiety signals, while ghrelin promotes hunger. These hormones are also involved in glucose homeostasis and body-weight regulation. The aim of this cross-sectional analysis was to examine the association of these peptide-hormones with obesity-markers, insulin-resistance, and dyslipidemia (total-cholesterol (TC), low-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride (TG)). Sixteen-obese (OB) adults and 21 normal-weight (NW) age-and gender-matched counterparts were recruited. OB-participants showed significantly higher levels of leptin, insulin, Homeostatic-Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), and TG. NW participants had significantly higher levels of ghrelin. GLP-1 was positively correlated with insulin, HOMA-IR, and obesity-markers except percent body fat. Leptin was positively correlated with all markers (except glucose and dyslipidemia). PYY was positively correlated with BMI, insulin and HOMA-IR. Ghrelin was inversely correlated with all of the markers except glucose, TC, and LDL-C. In the regression analysis model, leptin was positively associated with obesity markers and insulin resistance. Our results indicate a significant difference in peptide hormones among OB and NW Lebanese individuals. Since there is controversial evidence regarding body-weight and peptide-hormones in the literature, this study highlights a step forward towards finding ethnic based strategies to treat obesity and its consequences. Since the beginning of their production, in the 1930s, phthalates have been widely used in the plastics industry to provide durability and elasticity to polymers that would otherwise be rigid, or as solvents in hygiene and cosmetic products. Taking into account their wide range of applications, it is easy to understand why their use has been increasing over the years, making them ubiquitous in the environment. This way, all living organisms are easily exposed to these compounds, which have already been classified as endocrine disruptor compounds (EDC), affecting hormone homeostasis. Along with this increase in phthalate-containing products, the incidence of several metabolic diseases has also been rising, namely diabetes. That said, and considering that factors such as obesity and genetics are not enough to explain this substantial increase, it has been proposed that the exposure to environmental contaminants may also be a risk factor for diabetes. Thus, the aim of this work is to review whether there is an association between the exposure to phthalates and the development of the several forms of diabetes mellitus, during pregnancy, childhood, and adulthood.
