We are pleased to announce that Metabolites will be granting the Travel Award to one junior scientist. Applications will be assessed by an Evaluation Committee consisting of senior scholars from the Metabolites Editorial Board. 

This award provides financial support for the winner to attend an international conference in the fields of metabolomics, metabolic biochemistry, computational and systems biology, biotechnology, and medicine to be held in 2025 in order to hold a presentation, present a poster, or both.

Candidate Requirements:
– Postdoctoral fellows or Ph.D. students.
– Plans to attend an international conference in 2025 (oral presentation or poster). 

Required Application Documents:
– Information about the conference the applicant is planning to attend and the abstract that will be submitted.
– Curriculum vitae and list of publications.
– Justification letter describing the focus of the research (max. 800 words).
– Letter of recommendation from the supervisor, research director, or department head, which also confirms the applicant’s status as a postdoctoral fellow/PhD student.

The winner will be awarded CHF 500 and a certificate.

This prize will be given to one young investigator in recognition of their excellence in the field of metabolomics, metabolic biochemistry, computational and systems biology, biotechnology, and medicine. All nominations will be assessed by an Award Evaluation Committee led by the journal’s Editor-in-Chief. 

The Prize
− CHF 2000;

− Must have received their PhD no more than 10 years prior to 31 December 2024;

Dr. Tao Huan received his PhD in 2015 and has an outstanding publication record, comprising 82 publications in peer-reviewed international journals. Tao Huan’s Scopus scientific citations number 3175, and his Hirsch index is 27. He is clearly a rising star in the field of metabolomics. As a co-applicant, Dr. Tao Huan has secured funding of more than CAD 13 million since 2018. This is an outstanding achievement in today’s competitive environment. Dr. Wout Bittremieux is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Antwerp in Antwerp, Belgium. Dr. Bittremieux’s research employs advanced computational techniques to solve fundamental biological questions, including developing algorithmic solutions and artificial intelligence methods for the analysis of mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and proteomics data. Dr. Bittremieux received his PhD in 2017 and has an outstanding publication record, comprising 51 publications in peer-reviewed international journals. Dr. Bittremieux’s Scopus Scientific Citations number is 809 and his Hirsch index is 17. He is clearly a rising star in the field of computational metabolomics. Dr. Bittremieux has secured funding of more than EUR 950,000 since 2019. This is an outstanding achievement in today’s competitive environment. Currently, his research work is based on the application of metabolomics and foodomics to food chemistry, meat science, dairy science, and plant science. We are pleased to announce that the winner of the Metabolites 2020 Young Investigator Award is Dr. Rodrigo Ledesma-Amaro.

Dr. Rodrigo Ledesma-Amaro is the Group leader at Imperial College London (Lecturer), Dept. Bioengineering and the Imperial College Centre for Synthetic Biology. He obtained his PhD at the University of Salamanca under the supervision of Prof. Jose Luis Revuelta. During his PhD, Rodrigo was a visiting researcher at Prof. Jens Nielsen’s group at Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), at Prof. Jean-Marc Nicaud’s lab at INRA (France), and at Prof. Kamisaka’s group at AIST (Japan). After the PhD, he moved to France thanks to an Agreenskills Marie Curie Fellowship and he performed his postdoc in the group of Jean-Marc Nicaud. Most of his postdoctoral research work was done on the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica. The research of Dr. Ledesma-Amaro has focused on the understanding and engineering of metabolism in industrial microorganisms and microbial communities with the aim of creating more sustainable bioproduction methods.

As the awardee, Dr. Ledesma-Amaro will receive an honorarium of 2000 CHF and a certificate of award.

JENNIFER MATTHEWS, a Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Technology, Sydney, whose research focuses on employing state-of-theart molecular, imaging, and microbiological techniques to identify the key metabolic networks in Symbiodiniacea–bacteria associations that drive dinoflagellate ecological success. She is planning to present her work “Microbial Metabolic Networks: The Hidden Key to Resilience of Coral Algal Endosymbionts” at the Metabolomics 2019 Conference (23–27 June 2019, The Hague, the Netherlands).

Each Travel Award consists of a certificate and 800 CHF to attend an academic conference of their choice in 2019. Congratulations to the winners of this highly competitive travel award.
