Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Infertility affects approximately 10% of couples worldwide, and today around 1% of live births are obtained undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART). The safety of the procedures performed is a critical issue, and should be continuously investigated in order to determine the putative risk associated with infertility treatments. Both short- and long-term risks have been hypothesized. Gamete and embryo micromanipulations such as fertilization techniques, culture conditions, trophectoderm biopsy and cryopreservation as well as the protocols used for controlled ovarian stimulations are only some of the topics currently under investigation. As currently available data on the association between ART and the incidence of post-pregnancy complications, neonatal malformations and psychological disorders in parents and the children are controversial, papers presenting updated evidence are highly encouraged. The current Special Issue aims to focus on the putative risks, mechanisms and possible consequences of ART treatments, in order to address the tailored counselling of infertile couples before personalized treatment.
