Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The benefits of energy transition and the green revolution are predominantly environmental, but their impact is crucial for human wellbeing, social equity, and economy. The efficient use and valorization of materials, transforming them into resources for the production of other goods and prolonging their life cycle, should be the focus of research to foster new systemic strategies in sustainable economies. This paradigm, applied to the energy transition, favors the use of renewable energy sources instead of fossil sources, accelerates digitization and electrification processes to make consumption more efficient, and develops innovative services, such as electric mobility, smart systems, decentralized and efficient energy conversion systems, etc.

The green economy is based on efficient and sustainable production and consumption activities and their environmental impacts, aiming to reduce resources’ consumption, emissions, and waste generation along the complete life cycle of processes and products. This recent concept refers to a mix of current and emerging principles (e.g., sustainable development, resources efficiency), activity sectors (e.g., energy, industry, services), and topics (e.g., products’ life-cycle analysis, economic and environmental impact assessment, policymaking, economic resilience, modeling, optimization).

Thus, to further disseminate the impact of energy transitions for a more sustainable economy, this Special Issue, entitled “Energy Transitions for a Green Economy: Strategies, Utilities, and Resources”, was proposed for the international journal Energies, which is an SSCI and SCIE journal (2020 IF = 3.004). This Special Issue covers original research and studies related to the described background, including but not limited to the topics listed below. Papers selected for this Special Issue will be subject to a rigorous peer review procedure with the aim of prompt and wide dissemination of research results, developments, and applications.

We are writing to invite you to submit your original work to this Special Issue. Reviews are also welcome. We look forward to receiving your outstanding research.

This paper explores gender dimensions of the energy transition in the European Union (EU). The EU has set out its ambitions for an equitable transition to clean secure energy. It has also set out it objectives for gender equality. In this paper, I implement a systematic literature review to explore the intersection of gender issues with the energy transition in the EU. There is little peer reviewed literature in this area. Analysis of academic papers shows most focus on social science rather than technical or engineering problems. A critical review of the grey literature including EU policies and reports shows that there is a disconnect between EU gender equality and clean energy plans and that gender has yet to be mainstreamed into the EU energy transition. This review identifies opportunities to mainstream gender into EU energy policies by linking to EU gender equality objectives, and connecting to gender-energy research themes. Full article
