Insight into bacterial cellular composition and functions can be obtained by the application of metabolomics. Metabolomics enables comprehensive characterization of a set of low-molecular-weight compounds which are starting, intermediate, or end products of metabolic transformations in living organisms. Metabolites are directly related to biochemical, physiological, and pathophysiological processes and they reflect the activity of genes at a particular time in a given environment. They provide information about how the environment affects organisms, including the action of potential drugs. Metabolomic intracellular fingerprinting and extracellular footprinting can provide complementary and classifying information about the mechanisms of action of antibacterial compounds. Both sets of metabolites are affected in a distinct manner when bacteria are under the influence of compounds with intracellular or extracellular targets. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry supported by bioinformatics was successfully applied to monitor compounds in mycobacterial cultures. Changes in tuberculosinyladenosine levels or in metabolites related to energy pools (e.g., nicotinic acid ribonucleotide, acetyl phosphate, adenosine 5′-monophosphate, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) were detected after bacterial exposure to natural products. Indigenous available common reed stalk has been investigated as potential feedstock for pyrolysis at temperatures between 400 and 600 °C. The performance of this type of feedstock was evaluated in terms of yield towards pyrolysis products. The two main products of interest, biochar and bio-oil, have been characterized through textural analysis and GC-MS, respectively, with the relation between temperature and characteristics being highlighted. Increasing the pyrolysis temperature led to smaller yields in biochar and an improvement of textural properties, such as specific surface area and total pore volume, while the composition of the bio-oil changed significantly as the temperature increased. In the context of the global COVID-19 pandemic caused by the highly transmissible SARS-CoV-2 virus, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have emerged as a cutting-edge solution for the specific recognition of the Spike S1 protein, a crucial element in the virus’s cellular entry. This pandemic determined challenges in rapid virus detection, mutation monitoring, and vaccine distribution. MIPs, with their specific binding sites, offer a unique approach to selectively capture and detect the Spike S1 protein, providing a basic start for rapid diagnostics or targeted therapeutics. This work presents the potential of MIPs in solving the complex SARS-CoV-2 problem, highlighting the promising combination of nanotechnology, molecular imprinting, and virology to combat the ongoing global crisis and prepare for future viral threats. Colorimetric detection, a technique that observes changes in colour as a signal, has been employed in the identification of bacterial presence using gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs). Au-NPs exhibit unique optical properties, changing their colour in response to bacterial interactions. This straightforward and rapid method offers potential for early diagnosis and monitoring of bacterial infections. The sensitivity and specificity of Au-NPs provide a promising tool for the next-generation point-of-care diagnostics, streamlining bacterial detection without the need for complex instrumentation. The aggressive progress of global industry has led to environmental pollution, particularly to the development of wastewater containing non-biodegradable compounds, which has affected the ecosystem and human health. Advanced oxidation processes can solve this problem by creating reactive species following solar irradiation, which is an efficient and sustainable technology for removing non-biodegradable contaminants from aqueous effluents. Our group developed photocatalysts with apatite-based metal–oxide heterojunctions to assess the removal of a well-known organic pollutant. Full article

Incorporating crumb rubber into road bitumen represents a fundamental advancement in enhancing pavement performance and managing tire waste. While poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) is a common choice for enhancing elasticity, its inherent limitations and environmental implications necessitate the exploration of alternatives. This study introduces the development of a novel crumb rubber derivative with superior elastic properties. The resulting modified bitumen exhibited a 58.3% reduction in crumb rubber sulfur content and a consistent asphaltene content of 18.7 ± 0.2%, ensuring its homogeneity. This research marks an advancement in producing elastic bitumen for specialized applications, contributing to sustainable road construction practices. Full article

A selenium–vinasse plant biostimulant was foliar-sprayed on white cabbage cultivated in a drought area, and various analytic methods were applied on the control and treated cultivars in order to investigate particular analytic fingerprints relevant for cabbage cell wall development and plant biofortification. IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, fiber content and thermogravimetry evidenced specific fingerprints regarding cabbage cell wall composition in pectin and Iα-cellulose, soluble and insoluble fibers, volatiles and mineral content, together with a faster molecular metabolism toward pectin and Iα-cellulose accumulation and increased biofortification with minerals. Nowadays, water purification technologies are based on nano-scaled adsorbents, such as metal or polymeric nanoadsorbents, metal organic frameworks, metal oxide nanoparticles, and carbonated nanomaterials, which have shown exceptional results in water decontamination. Adsorption is one of the most environmentally friendly and efficient methods used for pollutant removal from aquatic environments due to the large specific surface area of nanoadsorbents, which creates multiple adsorption sites. Therefore, we developed a synthesis method for the large-scale production of an apatitic adsorbent, which we will further use in a water treatment system. Full article

As biostimulants may have a mechanism related to increasing tolerance to abiotic stress (drought, salinity, heat shock, etc., which will increase the production of Reactive Oxygen Species, ROS, such as peroxynitrite (PON)), this work proposes electrochemical solutions for the rapid screening of biostimulants, based on a sensor’s selectivity toward PON, for further efficient biostimulant formulation, as nowadays, biostimulants are still developed and commercialized using compositions developed by hazard, and not by design (as this work proposes). Glyphosate (IUPAC name: N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine) is a globally used phosphorous herbicide. Efficient technologies are currently unavailable for glyphosate removal. In this study, nanosilica functionalized with aminopropyl groups was synthesized and studied for glyphosate removal by adsorption. The material was characterized by carrying out SEM, TG, FTIR, BET surface area and pore size distribution measurements. The results showed that the nanosilica was better suited for glyphosate adsorption following the Henry isotherm model, with the reaction being spontaneous and feasible. The performance (quantitative adsorption and complete nanosilica recovery) is worthy of note, considering that the sorbent can be regenerated and reused for at least five cycles. Full article
