Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Plants and biocontrol agents are able to release into the rhizosphere a large number of bioactive compounds that can modify the complex network of interactions between them, thus influencing plant–microbe interactions.
In response to microbial attackers, plants change the chemicals that their roots secrete and consequentially can shape the composition of root microbiomes.
Many secondary metabolites that are produced by beneficial microbes have been found to play an important role in the biocontrol of plant diseases due to their antibiotic properties, which allow the producing microbe to inhibit pathogens.
Moreover, biocontrol-related metabolites may increase plant fitness and trigger systemic plant defence activity, thus inducing disease resistance.
In the present Special Issue, we intend to cover the following topics:

  • the isolation of novel plant and/or microbial compounds using metabolomics approaches;
  • the characterization of molecules and secondary metabolites;
  • plant and biocontrol bioactive metabolites;
  • application of molecules in agriculture (crop and animal production);
  • natural products with a beneficial outcome in agriculture and animal husbandry;
  • the influence of bioactive metabolites on plant and animal metabolomes; and
  • microbial metabolites involved in plant or animal interactions.

For this Special Issue, we welcome full research papers, reviews, and short communications that provide an overview of recent advances in the isolation, characterization, and applications of natural bioactive molecules.

Marine-derived fungi are an important source of many valuable compounds with original structures and diverse physico-chemical properties. In this work, the metabolomic profile of a strain of Penicillium brevicompactum, recovered from a snakelocks sea anemone (Anemonia sulcata), was investigated through the parallel application of LC-ESI-HRMS, GC-MS, and NMR. Our strategy allowed the identification of mycophenolic acid, brevianamide A, and several compounds belonging to the thiosilvatins. Among the latter, five products are reported for the first time in this species. The main product of this series, cis-bis(methylthio)silvatin, was also tested for antiproliferative activity on both cancer and non-tumoral colon cell lines. Full article
