Dear Colleagues,
Photodynamic therapy is an innovative and dynamic area of research where efforts are made to develop and offer new treatment modalities for oncology, dermatology, ophthalmology, and dentistry pathologies, among others. PDT is based on photosensitiser molecules and visible light irradiation, capable of eliciting multiple cellular responses, including cancer-cell death, immune system activation, or microorganism destruction.
Besides its relevance for treatment, PDT can be useful for diagnosis, as photosensitisers are generally fluorescent molecules with characteristic spectra. Moreover, several modifications to photosensitisers in order to combine other diagnostic techniques, such as positron emission tomography (PET) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), increase its potential. Theragnostics, based on the use of photosensitisers, is a promising approach, joining treatment and diagnosis, and materializing guided treatment and real-time follow up.
This Special Issue of Medicina aims to provide the readership with the current research on photodynamic therapy, in particular, on the development and use of photosensitisers for diagnostic and theragnostic applications. Original research and review manuscripts using different cellular and animal models, as well as translational work describing the potential of photodynamic therapy and photo diagnosis, will be included.
