Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent decades, the situation of modern economic growth and overexploitation of forest resources has made the innovation of products and processes crucial to guarantee the economic and environmental sustainability of the forestry subsector, as well as crucial for facing the climate and environmental challenges of global society.

In this sense, this Special Issue is oriented toward the publication of works that analyze, from a technical, productive, or economic perspective, the innovation processes that have taken place in recent decades throughout the production chain of wood, cork, resin, and other forest products. The focus of the works can have a historical approach or refer to the current era. Research that addresses present and future trends in forest production will be especially well received, particularly if they consider new applications of forest resources or innovations in products and processes that imply a more efficient and rational use.

Similarly, this Special Issue aims to be an interdisciplinary framework that brings together technical works, economic and productive analyses, sectoral or regional studies, and even humanistic and historiographical essays, provided that they are closely related to some of the thematic lines proposed in this monographic issue.

Climate change, carbon footprint, circular economy, or economic and environmental sustainability are topics with which the works presented for evaluation should explore. However, research that explores new uses and applications of forest resources are equally desirable, especially if the implications derived from them are addressed in the aforementioned terms.

Finally, as guest editors we are interested in comparative studies that address works on specific forest productions in different regional settings, or that confront productive or sectorial dynamics related to different forest resources.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

The article presents a complete approach for the wood industry for assessing the state of circular economy adoption by companies. A methodology for achieving this purpose is proposed and then implemented with the help of a specific questionnaire. The study is based on a literature survey with two components, one relating to reports on the concept of circularity and one relating to the methodological aspects of determining and measuring the progress of companies. Starting from these aspects and factoring in the sectoral evolution in Romania, the assessment directions and detailed questions for each are established essentially through a mind-mapping process. For validation, the questionnaire with seven evaluation viewpoints covered in 28 items is applied within the Romanian wood industry to 60 companies. The analysis of results is carried out using descriptive and inferential statical methods, such as ANOVA, showing good progress of the industry at company level, through individual efforts as well as the need to continue the transformation of the sector from the point of view of regulatory oversight and market acceptance. A set of recommendations for companies to advance their situation is proposed to help the maturation of the current circular approaches. Full article
