Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The need for society to move towards a sustainable world and the advancement of technology within this context are both critical. However, to achieve this, we must work in several directions. On the one hand, the proportion of energy consumption from renewable sources versus nonrenewable sources must increase substantially. On the other, energy must be consumed more rationally, so that the total consumption per capita decreases. In addition, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced, either by reducing the number of polluting sources or the advancement of techniques that reduce their effect.

However, to achieve these goals it is fundamental that we have a firm understanding of our starting point and the objectives to be followed. The United Nations, through their Global Goals for Sustainable Development, provide such objectives, with a clear timeline and certain limits to be met. It is, however, necessary to understand our current situation first. This Special Issue aims to uncover the trends and prospects in sustainable energy consumption and the control of greenhouse gas emission.

Conceptual and empirical papers are welcome. The following list of topics is in no way exhaustive. All topics relevant to the theme of Trends and Prospects in Sustainable Energy Consumption and Control of Greenhouse Gas Emission are equally welcomed. Potential topics include the following:

  • Drivers and barriers for sustainable energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Trends and prospects in sustainable energy consumption;
  • Methods for controlling and reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Systems and methods for optimizing energy consumption;
  • Renewable energy production;
  • Integration of renewable power generation in power systems;
  • Energy consumption and emission control in buildings, cities, and industries.

CO2 is the most emitted greenhouse gas and is mainly produced by human activity. In fact, about 75% is emitted in cities and 40% of global carbon emissions is produced by the building sector. Therefore, buildings are very important in terms of CO2 emissions. This importance is also reflected in the works that have been developed on this subject. This manuscript reviews the research that has shown or calculated the amounts of CO2 emitted in buildings. For a better understanding of the scope of the investigations, a classification is presented. With this, it is intended to help researchers interested in this area by summarizing the studies carried out to date on the amounts of CO2 emitted depending on the type of building. Full article
