Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are celebrating the 10th anniversary of Catalysts with a Special Issue in the Section “Nanostructured Catalysts” (ISSN 2073-4344; CODEN: CATACJ) in 2021.

On behalf of the Editor-in-Chief, Professor Keith Hohn, members of the Editorial Office, and ourselves as Guest Editors, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our authors and reviewers for their valuable contributions in ensuring that Catalysts is a successful and respected journal in its field. To celebrate the journal’s 10th anniversary, we will be serving as Guest Editors of a Special Issue focused around the design, synthesis, characterisation and application of Nanostructured Catalysts.

We warmly invite original research and state-of-the-art review/perspective contributions that promote understanding of the role and impact of catalytic properties engineered at the nanoscale on associated performance. Such properties may arise from bottom-up approaches such as the synthesis of nanoparticle, macromolecular and nanoporous solid catalysts, or through top-down nanopatterning of extended materials or the genesis of unique environments at the interfaces between different catalyst components in composites. Contributions may be experimental and/or theoretical, but must evidence clear structure-reactivity relationships that arise from nanoscale features.

The scope of this Special Issue is intended to be broad and reflective of the diverse and inclusive nature of research covered by Catalysts (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/catalysts).

Hydrogenations and hydrodeoxygenations represent two of the most important reactions in the production of both bulk and fine chemicals. Despite the wide and long use of metal-based catalysts for this reaction, there is still some uncertainty with respect to the properties governing the catalyst activity. Using the hydrogenation of benzaldehyde as a model reaction, in this paper, we disclose the dominant parameters determining catalyst activity of Pd nanoparticles supported on a carbonaceous material (carbon nanoplates, GNP). In particular, several operating parameters of the catalyst synthesis were varied in order to obtain materials with differences in such physico-chemical properties as nanoparticle size, Pd oxidation state and Pd surface exposure. A linear correlation between catalyst activity and the amount of surface Pd(0) atoms was found; this dependence, maintained after catalyst recycling, pointed out the nature of the active site of the Pd/GNP catalyst represented by exposed Pd(0) species. Mild catalytic oxidation of thioethers and thiophenes is an important reaction for the synthesis of molecules with pharmaceutical interest, as well as for the development of efficient processes able to remove sulfur-containing pollutants from fuels and wastewater. With respect to the green chemistry principles, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is the ideal oxidant and the Me-containing porous materials (Me = Ti, V, Mo, W, Zr) are among the best heterogeneous catalysts for these applications. The main classes of catalysts, including Me-microporous and mesoporous silicates, Me-layered double hydroxides, Me-metal–organic frameworks, are described in this review. The catalytic active species generated in the presence of H2O2, as well as the probable oxidation mechanisms, are also addressed. The reactivity of molecules in the sulfoxidation process and the role played by the solvents are explored. Full article
