Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue of Sustainability (ISSN 2071-1050; Current Impact Factor JCR: 3.889, Cite-Score Scopus 5.0) entitled "Education, Natural Environment and Awareness for Sustainability", aims to provide an opportunity to present advances related to the development of education in the natural environment, focusing on scientific works based on the principles of equity and sustainability from an interdisciplinary perspective. It will also consider studies that discuss the undertaking of educational activities in the natural environment, sports activities in natural environments, and proposals for environmental education.

Empirical or theoretical articles based on sports, leisure, or recreational activities in the natural environment from educational, sociological, or psychological points of view will be accepted.

The studies and works published in this monograph will complement the existing scientific evidence around the descriptors presented (educational assessment; emotional development; environmental education; mountain sports; natural environment; natural environment and mental health; program development; psychological evaluation; quality of life; social studies; sustainable development; sustainable education) from a holistic and integrated perspective. Thus, this Special Issue will contribute and enrich this field of research, with contributions from disciplines such as education, sociology, psychology, physical education, environmental education, leisure and free time in the natural environment, etc.

High-level performance in mountain sports would be unlikely unless different emotional factors are taken into account through the analysis of psychological characteristics, such as mood, resilience, or motivation, among many other variables. In this study, 788 people with a sports degree from the Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing (FEDME) participated, 75.3% of whom were men and 24.5% of whom were women. The mean age of the participants was 49.8 years (±12.8), ranging from 18 to 76 years. The Wong Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS-S), the RS-14 Resilience Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) instruments were used. The aim of this research was to determine the relationship between the dimensions of emotional intelligence, resilience, and life satisfaction. The results showed a relationship between several of the dimensions from the instruments used (p < 0.01). In terms of gender, higher scores were found for women than for men. The regression model shows that both the dimensions of emotional intelligence [appraisal of own emotions (β = 0.104; p < 0.001); use of emotions (β = 0.30; p < 0.001); emotional regulation (β = 0.103; p < 0.001)] and resilience [personal competence (β = 0.402; p < 0.001)] are predictors of greater life satisfaction, positively explained by the regression model with 44.1% accuracy. Further proposals should extend the results obtained to the analysis of more sports modalities to provide evidence that would complement those extracted in this research. Full article

Multicultural education plays a significant role in eliminating prejudices and developing concepts such as tolerance, understanding, respect for differences, and empathy. The northern part of Cyprus exhibits the characteristics of a society that has received increasing numbers of immigrants in recent years, and where the experiences of living together with individuals from different cultures begin to differ rapidly. As a result of increasing immigration to the northern part of Cyprus in recent years and the changing lives based on digitalization, students from different cultures have started to receive education in schools. The aim of this research is to evaluate the multicultural education policies to contribute to the creation and implementation of multicultural education policies according to the results of the evaluation of the role of digital educators in transforming cultures. In addition, the qualitative research model was adopted, and the Case Study pattern was used. The interview technique was used for data collection. The research universe consisted of 31 participants, including teacher training faculty members, administrators, and teachers working in public schools in the 2020–2021 academic year in the northern part of Cyprus. Educators participating in the research expressed more positive views on multiculturalism, multicultural education, and multicultural education. Full article

Background: Our aim was understanding and identifying the main performance factors involved in sport climbing. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using the Google Scholar, Dialnet, Scielo, and Redalyc databases. Results: After establishing the selection criteria, a total of 27 documents related to the subject of study were examined. A limited number of publications with scientific evidence related to performance factors in sport climbing were found, despite the rise of sport climbing following its inclusion in the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020. The results have been organized based on different performance factors analyzed, such as strength, muscular endurance, psychological factors, etc. Key determinants in climbing performance, and thus those present in elite athletes, include improved climbing efficiency, greater ability to apply maximum force or finger and palm pressure resistance, and increased arm locking strength. Additionally, it has been observed that those who can apply higher and more consistent loads experience better muscle oxygenation and have greater flexibility and lateral foot reach. Conclusions: Climbing performance is the result of factors that can be enhanced through training. Therefore, further research is needed to understand the performance factors involved in this sports discipline and how to improve them. Full article

The purpose of this research was to analyze the organizational structures of the different federations and entities representing the modalities of trail-running, skyrunning, and mountain running and how they have settled in the current sports landscape. The main task of these entities is to act as hosts of the legally established modalities, both internationally and nationally, applying their respective regulations and statutes unilaterally. Through an in-depth review of the different regulations, statutes, and current articles of all the organizations that represent the different disciplines, we can observe how a sport modality that seems to be the same is nevertheless distant in its execution (regulations, championships, classifications, systems of points, etc.), which has led to the international level being established in different sport modalities (trail running and skyrunning). At the level of the Spanish territory, it has led to an administrative dispute to know who has the powers to approve sports competitions. Full article

The use of educational platforms that allow dynamic learning mediated by information and communication technologies (ICT) has become a common method in different educational institutions. Thus far, these methodologies have been seen mainly within the classroom. Thus, it would be relevant to identify whether using these technologies to recognize cultural and natural exteriors allows complete learning by the users. Based on the above, the objective of this work was to identify the variables involved in people’s intellectual understanding of outdoor cultural and natural spaces with the support of ICT through a systematic literature review methodology based on PRISMA. The study found gamification to be one of the most relevant elements in the learning experience as well as the interdisciplinary approach to learning as a teaching methodology. As the main conclusion, we found that, although different technological tools have been developed for more dynamic learning experiences, the models developed for the evaluation of these tools in learning about outdoor cultural and natural spaces do not yet focus on knowledge consciousness, which still leaves open the field of research in this aspect.
