Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The marine environment is a unique and underexplored source of natural polymers and active biomolecules with specific biological, physicochemical, and structural properties. A growing interest towards sustainable approaches to reach maximum product output and profit from a single raw material has led to the development of alternative processes based on the valorization of marine biomass. Nowadays, the search for novel and eco-friendly methodologies that will successfully increase the value of marine bioresources and fishing byproducts as well as the search for new products are fundamental research goals.

This Special Issue will focus on the sustainable valorization of marine biomass by providing a spectrum of bio-based products as high added-value chemicals and materials for biomedical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and nutrition, packaging, composite, and biotechnological applications. We welcome research papers and reviews focused on the integrated utilization of marine resources and development and/or optimization of environmentally friendly extraction methods for biopolymers (polysaccharides and proteins) and bioactive molecules and/or their applications in the design and development of sustainable and functional (bio)materials in different forms, namely hydrogels, films, and (micro)particles, among others. With the same goal, biotechnological approaches including enzyme discovery and engineering for the valorization of marine biomass as well as advances in eco-friendly methods for marine biopolymers or biomolecules functionalization are also in the scope.

We would like to bring together a collection of wide-reaching works from leading experts and cutting-edge research from renowned groups in the community to provide a general overview of this interesting research topic.

Herein, the effect of three deterpenated fractions from Origanum majorana L. essential oil on the physicochemical, mechanical and biological properties of chitosan/β-chitin nanofibers-based nanocomposite films were investigated. In general, the incorporation of Origanum majorana L. original essential oil or its deterpenated fractions increases the opacity of the nanocomposite films and gives them a yellowish color. The water solubility decreases from 58% for chitosan/β-chitin nanofibers nanocomposite film to around 32% for the nanocomposite films modified with original essential oil or its deterpenated fractions. Regarding the thermal stability, no major changes were observed, and the mechanical properties decreased. Interestingly, data show differences on the biological properties of the materials depending on the incorporated deterpenated fraction of Origanum majorana L. essential oil. The nanocomposite films prepared with the deterpenated fractions with a high concentration of oxygenated terpene derivatives show the best antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger, with fungal growth inhibition of around 85.90%. Nonetheless, the only nanocomposite film that does not present cytotoxicity on the viability of L929 fibroblast cells after 48 and 72 h is the one prepared with the fraction presenting the higher terpenic hydrocarbon content (87.92%). These results suggest that the composition of the deterpenated fraction plays an important role in determining the biological properties of the nanocomposite films. Full article
