Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Metabolomics is a relatively emerging field that focuses on the high-throughput characterization of small molecular metabolites in biological systems. It is widely used in a variety of areas of science, particularly in the fields of food and pharmaceutical sciences. Because of its exceptional detection and prediction abilities, metabolomics is ideally suited to analyse such a complex matrix. By identifying the food's constituents at the molecular level, it is possible to better comprehend the complex relationships between a food's bioactive components and its nutritional and other effects. Identification of the health promoting compounds and metabolites in foods can be helpful in the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals. Metabolomics is a crucial method for assessing the authenticity of food. Analysing the molecular changes caused by food preparation is essential. Food safety, food quality, authenticity, and traceability are just a few of the topics that have been evaluated using metabolomics. Many metabolomics-based systems are employed in the early phases of drug discovery nowadays. Metabolomics analysis enables the defining of physiological response and target engagement (TE) markers, as well as the elucidation of the mode of action (MoA) of drug candidates under evaluation. Plant-based natural products have long been regarded as a reliable source of potential drug-active components. Natural extracts often contain hundreds to thousands of metabolites, and the bioactivity of natural extracts can be characterised by the synergism between different metabolites. The advent of metabolomics as a vital tool for the examination of thousands of metabolites from crude natural extracts has resulted in a paradigm shift in the study of natural products as drugs.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
