Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue includes selected papers from the 27th Pan-American Congress of Naval Engineering and IV Iberoamerican Congress of Naval Engineering.

The Pan-American Conference on Naval Engineering (Congreso Panamericano de Ingeniería Naval, COPINAVAL) is an annual conference on naval engineering. The latest edition, i.e., the 27th Pan-American Conference of Naval Engineering, took place in Cuba from 27th to 29th September 2022. The works that were submitted to this conference are welcomed to be submitted as an extended version to this Special Issue

The IV Iberoamerican Congress of Naval Engineering will take place in Spain from 3rd to 7th September 2023. Particularly, the congress will take place in Sevilla (Spain) from 3rd to 5th September 2023 and an optional technical extension will take place in Ferrol (Spain) in order to visit shipyards. The thematic areas of this congress are:

- Renewable energies and zero emissions
Energy efficiency on board ships, use of fuels with a low carbon footprint, LNG, ammonia, fixed and floating offshore wind, green hydrogen, connection electricity in port, zero emission ports, offshore industry, etc.

- Defense and security
International situation and new world defense balance, role of navies and naval programs, defense technologies and combat systems, weapons systems and their integration in ships, etc.

- Digitalization
Digital twins, collaborative platforms or integrated information systems, digitization of products and processes, automation, sensorization, IoT, blockchain, robotization and artificial intelligence in the maritime sector, autonomous and unmanned systems, advanced manufacturing and industry 5.0, virtual and augmented reality technologies, etc.

- Fishing and aquaculture
Sustainable fishing, seafood, new species and technologieture, etc.

The languages of the congress will be English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The first call for abstracts takes place from 15th November 2022 to 24th March 2023. Researchers are invited to submit a work to this event and to publish an extended version in this Special Issue.

Hydrodynamic performance is an essential factor in the design of a watercraft, and the navigation scenario determines the complexity of its operation. This study aims to identify the effect of speed and length on the hydrodynamic behavior of a semi-planing watercraft in shallow waters. A computational fluid dynamics tool was employed to predict the trim, heave, and resistance parameters of two different hulls: a base hull and a craft with an increased hull length. The two hulls had similar hydrodynamic characteristics. The effects of speed and hull length on these predicted parameters obtained for the two hulls were compared. The results showed a low resistance uncertainty and a reduction in dynamic trim for longer hull lengths. These findings highlight the importance of considering balance and dynamic trim in designing shallow-draft watercrafts to ensure an optimal performance in specific conditions, such as rivers with depth restrictions. The design of an artificial reef (AR) module for improving the fishing productivity of cephalopod molluscs in the Ares-Betanzos estuary (Galicia, NW Spain) is addressed in this study. At the time of deciding on a suitable AR design, it is first necessary to assess how the different marine species use ARs so that it is possible to define the complexity of the design: its size and shape, as well as the number of nest cavities it should present and the dimensions of these cavities. Thus, two different cubic modules are proposed, both with an edge of 1500 mm. One of them can be considered as the standard design, while the other has been modified to include four open cylindrical holes. Several tools are employed to assess both proposals. Moreover, a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) model is performed. The results suggest that the flow in the interior of the tubes provides a suitable environment for cephalopod molluscs, given that circulation is produced, guaranteeing nutrient renewal. As further contributions, the present work determines how the capture of cephalopods and other species in Galician fish markets has evolved and reviews the habitat preferred by cephalopods in Galicia. The reporting system for fishing vessel and crew casualties in Peru needs a disruptive change in order to know what the risks in terms of marine safety are, who should manage them, and how they should be managed. According to a technical review on accidents recorded by the Peruvian Direction of Captaincies and Coast Guards (DICAPI), it is evident there is a need to process the available information on casualties of fishing vessels and crew in the fishing industry since this information is not easy to analyze. Nevertheless, this paper provides the casualties reported between 2004 and 2010, and from 2013 to 2020. In order to understand the research endeavors and trends surrounding the safety of fishing vessels, a systematic review using VOSviewer was performed. After a deep analysis and study of the information available in Peru, as well as reports and regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), and the recent advances available in the scientific literature on the safety of fishing vessels and crew casualties around the world, this paper presents some proposals regarding the current Peruvian scenario that are expected to be considered in new regulations. Operators of offshore production units (OPUs) employ risk-based assessment (RBA) techniques in order to minimise inspection expenses while maintaining risks at an acceptable level. However, when human divers and workers are involved in inspections conducted at high heights, the operational risks can be significant. Recently, there has been a growing trend towards the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for inspections of offshore structures as a means to reduce exposure to human risk. This article provides an analysis of these vehicle inspection capabilities and their potential to enhance robustness and safety within the oil and gas industry. The review assesses both the advantages and the drawbacks associated with these innovative systems, providing valuable comparisons and assessments on their potential use as viable alternatives to conventional inspection methods.
