Otolaryngology

A section of Journal of Clinical Medicine (ISSN 2077-0383).

Section Information

Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery is an exciting and diverse area involving many types of surgery performed on the intricate structures of the ear, nose, pharynx, larynx, base of skull, head and neck.

Restoration of function through exciting research into therapies for loss of hearing, smell, and taste is important for a patient’s quality of life. The nose and sinuses are affected by allergies, infection, inflammation, and obstruction. Some of the exciting areas of future research and innovation in rhinology include the role of the epithelial barrier and the sinus microbiome in chronic rhinosinusitis, use of topical therapies and biologics for treating chronic rhinosinusitis, and the nasal corridor for endoscopic access to the anterior, middle and posterior skull base. The potential use of the nose as a way of drug delivery to the brain for treating Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s is an exciting area of future research.

Head and neck cancers continue to grow worldwide especially human papilloma virus (HPV) associated cancers. Robotic surgery (TORS) and de-escalation of radiotherapy, immunotherapy options and the increasing importance of quality of life in cancer treatment are exciting areas of research. Metastatic cutaneous cancers including melanoma is an area needing new therapies to improve survival outcomes. Laryngology with the important functions of breathing, voice and swallowing is an area of growing research. The problems of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is improving with promising new multi-level upper airway surgery and the hypoglossal nerve stimulator options for treating OSA.

We welcome your contribution on Otolaryngology research and manuscript submission to the Journal of Clinical Medicine.
