Dear Colleagues,
Cancer-related mortality is rarely due to the primary tumor but, rather, due to the dissemination of cancer cells to other sites of the body through metastasis. For metastasis to take place, cells need to properly modify the tumor microenvironment (TME), regulate their adhesion both to the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the neighboring cells, and coordinate actin cytoskeleton dynamics, to be able to finally detach from the original tumor mass, migrate, and invade through adjacent normal tissue and eventually establish a new metastatic colony in other organs. Despite the active research efforts in the field, there are many unanswered questions with regard to the role of TME, the actin cytoskeleton, and the cellular and molecular mechanisms implicated in cancer cell metastasis. Addressing these questions will certainly enhance our understanding of the metastatic process and facilitate the development of new therapeutic interventions to target metastasis and ultimately improve patients’ lives.
This Special Issue of IJMS will cover a variety of topics with regard to the involvement of TME and actin cytoskeleton in cancer cell metastasis, such as the role of integrins, ECM-related adhesion proteins, cancer-associated fibroblasts, tumor-associated vasculature, and actin cytoskeleton in cancer cell migration; in vitro and in vivo experimental approaches; the involvement of mechanobiology, latest methods, and advanced technologies in monitoring cancer cell metastasis and actin structures in vitro; and developments with respect to actin-targeting and/or metastasis drugs.
