We are pleased to announce the “IJMS 2024 Best Paper Award” for research and review articles published in IJMS in 2022. Three reviews and three research articles will each receive an award. The papers will be selected after a thorough evaluation by the IJMS Award Committee, led by the Editors-in-Chief.

Eligibility for the Award:
– Papers published in IJMS in 2022;
– Open to all career levels;
– Both regular and Special Issue submissions will be considered.

Selection Criteria:
The papers will be selected by the journal Award Committee according to the following criteria:
– Scientific merit and broad impact;
– Originality of the research objectives and/or the ideas presented;
– Creativity of the study design or uniqueness of the approaches and concepts;
– Clarity of presentation;
– Citations and downloads.

The Prize:
– Three review awards: a chance to publish a paper free of charge after peer review in IJMS in 2024;
– Three research article awards: a chance to publish a paper free of charge after peer review in IJMS in 2024;
– Each winner will also receive a certificate.

The winners will be announced on the journal website in March 2024.

We are pleased to announce that IJMS will be granting the Travel Award to three junior scientists. The applications will be assessed by an Evaluation Committee consisting of senior scholars from the IJMS Editorial Board.

This award provides financial support for the winners to attend an international conference in biochemistry and molecular biology, molecular medicine, biomaterial, and molecular biophysics to be held in 2024, in order to hold a presentation, present a poster, or both.

Candidate Requirements:
– Postdoctoral fellows or PhD students.
– Plans to attend an international conference in 2024 (oral presentation or poster).

Required Application Documents:
– Information of the conference the applicant is planning to attend and the abstract that will be submitted.
– Curriculum Vitae and list of publications.
– Justification letter describing the focus of the research (max. 800 words).
– Letter of recommendation from the supervisor, research director, or department head, which also confirms the applicant’s status as a postdoctoral fellow/ PhD student.

The winners (three awardees) will each be awarded CHF 800 and a certificate.

Dr. Adriana Vinhas, a Junior Researcher at the 3B’s Research Group (I3Bs), University of Minho, Portugal. Her research focuses on the environmental features mediating inflammatory signals and pro-healing phenotypes in tendon cells, and on the tendon cells’ responsiveness to magnetic fields.

Dr. Andi Cani is currently transitioning from a postdoctoral fellowship to a Research Investigator role in Dr. Daniel Hayes’ lab at the University of Michigan studying breast cancer through circulating tumor cells and using ctDNA liquid biopsies. His career goals are to build an independent research program that includes translational studies of cancer evolution and its clinically relevant, targetable vulnerabilities.

Dr. Stefano Tomassi has been an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Naples Federico II since 2019, in which he conducts research in medicinal chemistry and developing novel chemotypes to mimic nucleic acid biological functions.

As the awardees, they will each receive an honorarium of CHF 800 and a certificate.

We are pleased to announce the winners of the IJMS 2022 Young Investigator Award.

Ho-Chang Kuo graduated from the National Yang-Ming University, Taiwan, with an M.D. degree in 1999 and a PhD degree from the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medical Science at Chang Gung University, Taiwan, in 2011. Now, he is the Director of the “Kawasaki Disease Center” in Taiwan. His research and clinical expert field are in Kawasaki disease and allergic diseases.

John Charles Rotondo is currently a Principal Investigator at the Department of Medical Sciences, University of Ferrara, Ferrara, Italy. His research is focused on evaluating the role of non-coding RNA molecules in modulating epithelial cell proliferation, differentiation and adhesion processes and understanding the dysregulated immunological, genetic and epigenetic mechanisms relying on the onset and progression of cancers of different histotypes, including Merkel cell, vulvar and cervical carcinomas. He studied the role of small DNA tumor viruses including human polyoma- and papillomaviruses in human cancers and other diseases.

Luca Falzone holds the research associate position at the National Cancer Institute IRCCS Fondazione G. Pascale of Naples (Italy) and is the head of the “Cancer Epigenetics and Biomarker Discovery” research group at the Experimental Oncology Laboratory, Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences, University of Catania (Italy). His research activities are focused on the study of biological processes involved in the development of cancer including the role of epigenetic alterations as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.

Manuel Gomez-Florit is an Assistant Researcher and Junior Principal Investigator at the Health Research Institute of the Balearic Islands. He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of the Balearic Islands. His research focuses on the use of platelet-derived extracellular vesicles and biomolecules for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications, with an emphasis on tendon regeneration.

Suowen Xu is a full professor at the First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China. His research interest centers on the molecular mechanism of endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis.

Each awardee will receive an honorarium of CHF 1000 and an electronic certificate.

Dr. Carlo Matera graduated with a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the University of Milan, where he also obtained a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry in 2010 after defending his thesis on the development of bifunctional modulators of nicotinic and dopamine receptors. He obtained a postdoctoral position funded by the EU Human Brain Project in a group led by Prof. Pau Gorostiza at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia, where he began his studies in the field of photopharmacology in 2015. Since October 2020, Carlo Matera has been working as a researcher at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Milan.

Dr. Ilaria Tonazzini is currently a researcher at Nanoscience Institute—National Research Council (CNR) @ NEST in Pisa. She obtained her Master’s degree cum laude in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies and her PhD in Drug Science from the University of Pisa (IT). As a postdoc, she worked at the Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials—CNR in Bologna (IT) and then at the Scuola Normale Superiore and Nanoscience Institute—CNR at the NEST laboratory in Pisa. Her research focuses on the development of biocompatible nanostructured materials for the treatment of the peripheral nervous system and approaches to combat central nervous system diseases.

Dr. Elisabetta Coppi obtained her Master’s degree cum laude in Biological Science at the University of Florence, Italy, in 2003. She obtained her PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology in April 2007 under the supervision of Prof. Felicita Pedata, University of Florence, Italy, and Prof. Alasdair Gibb, University College London, UK. She is presently a postdoctoral fellow in the same group, where she is involved in research projects under Prof. Pedata’s supervision at the University of Florence, and she spent a year at UCL as a guest researcher in Prof. Gibb’s laboratory. Her research focuses on the role of the neuromodulator adenosine and its receptors in modulating synaptic transmission and myelination in the central nervous system.

Prof. Alessandro D’Urso is an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Sciences at the University of Catania, Catania, Italy. His research interests pertain to supramolecular chemistry and template-aided noncovalent syntheses of (chiral and achiral) supramolecular systems. D’Urso’s Scopus Scientific Citations number is >1300 and his H-index is 21.

Dr. Apostolos Zaravinos is an Associate Professor at the Department of Life Sciences, School of Sciences, European University Cyprus. He has published 12 articles, thus far, in 2021. From 2016 to 2020, he received a Scopus Scientific Citations number of 2921 from 2700 documents, and his H-index is 33.

Prof. Cesar de la Fuente-Nunez is a Presidential Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He has received over 50 awards, given over 150 invited lectures, is an inventor on multiple patents, and has published approximately 100 manuscripts in several international journals.

Dr. Maria Teresa Caccamo is a Researcher of Physics at the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Physical Sciences and Earth Sciences at Messina University. Her research interests are mainly associated with the experimental investigation. She has an outstanding publication record, constituted by 82 publications in peer-reviewed international journals, with 1259 citations, and an H-index of 21.

Dr. Tiziana Bonifacino is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacy (DiFAR) at the University of Genoa, Italy. Her currently main research interest is in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Tiziana Bonifacino’s Scopus Scientific Citations number is 968 and her H-index is 16.

Each of the awardees will receive an honorarium of CHF 1000 (Swiss Francs) and a certificate. Winner of Molecular Biology: Prof. Dr. Claudio Luchini, MD, PhD, is a pathologist, researcher and Associate Professor at Verona University. He has produced groundbreaking research in the field of molecular biology, oncology and of surgical and molecular pathology, in particular regarding pancreatic cancer.

Winner of Biomaterial: Dr. Filippo Rossi is Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano. He has produced groundbreaking research in the field of polymer-based biomaterials, both in bulk and colloid forms, and contributed significantly to the advancement of pharmaceutical therapies in the central nervous system.

Winner of Molecular Biophysics: Dr. Vanessa Checchetto is Assistant Professor at the University of Padua. She has produced groundbreaking research in the field of ion channels, first in green organisms and then in the mitochondria of mammalian cells. She contributed significantly to the discovery and the characterization of the first thylakoid-membrane-located channel in green organisms, and some other highly important scopes in the context of cardiac ischemia.

Winner of Molecular Medicine: Dr. Antonios Chatzigeorgiou is Assistant Professor of Physiology at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and has produced groundbreaking research in the field of Metabolism. His work sheds light on important issues pertinent to the role of obesity- and diabetes-related inflammation in the development of pathophysiological complications. He has also proposed innovative therapeutic approaches and strategies in this direction.

Winner of Biochemistry: Prof. Dr. Riekelt Houtkooper is Professor of Translational Metabolism at the University of Amsterdam, where he works at the Amsterdam University Medical Centers (location AMC). He produced groundbreaking research in the field of molecular and translational metabolism, both in the context of inborn errors of metabolism and aging. He has co-authored over 120 journal papers, published in leading peer-reviewed journals. His overall citation number is 12475.

Each of the awardees will receive an honorarium of 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs) and an engraved plaque.

We are pleased to announce the three winners of the IJMS 2019 Travel Awards:

Dr. Fernando Souza-Fonseca-Guimaraes, a senior postdoctoral research fellow at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Australia. His research focuses on natural killer cells and signaling pathways that regulate their development and function in homeostasis and disease.

Dr. Erika Gyengesi, a lecturer at Western Sydney University, Australia, whose research focuses on the effects of chronic neuroinflammation in the rodent brain, in particular, on the basal forebrain cholinergic system and its connected areas.

Dr. Joanne Tsui Ming Tan, a senior postdoctoral researcher at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, Australia. Her research focuses on identifying novel therapeutic targets to relieve the debilitating effects of diabetic vascular complications.

Each Travel Award consists of a certificate and 800 CHF to attend an academic conference of their choice in 2019. Congratulations to the winners of this highly competitive travel award.

We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2017 IJMS Young Investigator Prize and three 2017 IJMS Travel Awards:
The 2017 IJMS Young Investigator Prize has been awarded to Dr. Rob W. J. Collin, an Associate Professor at the Department of Human Genetics, Radboud University Medical Center, The Netherlands. His research focuses on developing molecular therapies for inherited eye disorders.
As the awardee, Dr. Collin will receive an honorarium of 2000 CHF as he has made remarkable contributions to the retinal degenerations and translational research, including the discovery of a record number of novel genes associated with hearing impairment and blindness during his early research period and developing novel genetic treatment strategies for inherited retinal diseases based on splice modulation therapy and (micro)gene augmentation therapy.

The 2017 IJMS Travel Awards have been granted to:
Biochemistry—Dr. Yi Ma, a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Connecticut, USA. Her research focuses on Ca²⁺ associated signaling cascades in plant cells.
Molecular Medicine—Dr. Miranda Ween, a Post-Doctoral Researcher at Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia. Her research focuses on respiratory medicine.
Biomaterial—Dr. Reza M. Zadegan, a Post-Doctoral Researcher at Boise State University, USA. His research focuses on nanomaterials for synthetic biology, nanotechnology, and Nucleic Acid Memory (NAM).
These awards consist of 800 Swiss Francs each, to attend an academic conference of their choices in 2017.
