Dear Colleagues,
The cell, the essential building block of life, faces a diverse range of molecular biophysical disturbances, including those encountered through chemical and biophysical approaches to cryopreservation. Delving deep into cellular damage and understanding its underlying mechanisms is of utmost importance. At the same time, there is an imperative need to recognize the duality of our approaches: on one hand, safeguarding cells through protective measures, and on the other, purposefully inducing damage, particularly evident in clinical scenarios such as cancer treatments. In this Special Issue, "Cellular Damage: Protection and Induction", we strive to unravel the multifaceted nature of the biophysical damage cells face. Our focus extends to the protective strategies employed via regenerative medicine, pharmacological means, and the nuances of cryopreservation, contrasting them against the deliberate harms, characteristic of treatments like radiation and chemotherapy. We warmly welcome scholars to enrich this issue with their pioneering research and insightful reviews that span across two critical domains: the intricate molecular pathways leading to biophysical cellular disruption and the evolving strategies that either bolster cellular defenses or purposefully target them.
