Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The reliable and uninterruptable operation of the power systems is prerequisite for the efficient and safe transfer and distribution of the electric energy. Especially nowadays, the increasing demand of energy, the penetration of Renewable Energy Sources and the electromobility cause paying more attention to a thorough understanding of the transient behavior of power systems and their protection against external and internal disturbances. In this context, the protection of the power systems against lightning and switching events that result in the development of dangerous for the equipment overvoltages is an issue of priority, in an effort to avoid supply interruptions, costly damage of the equipment and extra costs to the utilities because  of the undelivered energy.

To this direction, main topics of the current special issue are:

  • Transient phenomena on modern power systems
  • Protection of modern transmission and distribution systems against atmospheric and switching overvoltages
  • Grounding systems
  • Transients and EMC
  • Lightning protection of HVDC and MVDC systems
  • Insulation coordination
  • Surge arresters technologies
  • Lightning testing standards
  • Lightning attachment
  • Optimal design of lightning protection systems
  • Lightning protection of smart grids equipment

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Currently, lightning phenomenon, mechanisms, and impacts on lives and infrastructures have been satisfactorily decoded and studied. Sound knowledge of lightning parameters is available in international literature. Yet, there are few studies referring to lightning statistics such as the number of flashes over an area, current amplitude distribution, etc., except for official documentation from national weather services, perhaps because of the stochastic nature of lightning. This work presents full recorded data for lightning flashes over wind farms distributed at the Hellenic territory. The data come from real time measurements at wind farm stations from 2011 to 2020 and concern number of CG flashes and lightning current amplitude. They are statistically processed and analyzed and contain useful information regarding the lightning characteristics of various geographic regions all over the country. Furthermore, the study displays data from field measurements of ground resistance at wind turbines and highlights techniques of designing and enhancing grounding systems of wind turbines for given lightning protection level (LPL). The present study, therefore, provides stakeholders with useful data and noteworthy conclusions about lightning occurrence and characteristics in Greece in order to make informed decisions on the various project stages, such as selection of the wind farm site, proper and in-depth risk assessment, and investment in safety measures for personnel and equipment. A simplified and accurate model of a surge arrester used in the residual voltage test is proposed in this paper. With the help of a genetic algorithm, the measured impulse current and residual voltage waveforms are utilized to determine circuit parameters of the proposed model and the generation circuit precisely. The technique starts from the circuit parameter determination using the preliminary experimental data with a lower current peak than that specified by the standard. From the determined model and with the help of the genetic algorithm, the circuit parameters and the charging voltage to obtain the specified current peak and the residual voltage can be estimated accurately. The validity of the proposed technique has been verified by experiments for the estimation of the appropriate current circuit parameters, the charging voltage, and the residual voltage. In addition, the application of the proposed model in the residual voltage tests is presented. From comparison of simulated and experimental results with the determined parameters, the impulse current and residual voltage waveforms are determined precisely. It is confirmed that the proposed model and technique are attractive in the appropriate circuit parameter determination and the residual voltage estimation in the residual voltage tests of surge arresters. The proposed method also provides a good advantage for reduction of the number of trial and error experiments for obtaining the current waveform according to the standard requirement. Moreover, the unintentional damages of the arrester during the process of the waveform adjustment will be reduced significantly. Full article

Complex phase shifting transformer protection scheme and complexity of the object itself created a need to use simulation programs for their analysis. Often phase shifting transformer (PST) are modeled as a simplified series impedance and quadrature voltage source which cannot be used for power system protection analysis, especially in a transient condition. Therefore, the procedure of building realistic PST model was presented by using available transformer models with calculation of their parameters including interconnections between units. Paper consist calculations based on case study with symmetrical dual-core PST example. Additionally, theoretical background of PST principle, operation, and their impact of power system protection were introduced with numerus examples of PST model verification. Full article
