Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Neuron–astrocyte cooperation is essential to the maintenance of brain homeostasis, the regulation of neural circuits, and, ultimately, the execution of complex cerebral functions. In the last few years, astrocytes have emerged as key players in neuromodulation, being able to respond to neurotransmitters and release gliotransmitters that modulate neuronal circuit dynamics. Communication between neurons and astrocytes is crucial for synapse formation, function, and refinement, in addition to energy metabolism, cell signalling, and electrolyte homeostasis. To understand how neuron–astrocyte networks develop and operate, new insights are needed in the formation and regulation of neuron–astrocyte interactions that will provide new clues to the biological significance of these connections.

Recent advances in genetic and cellular technologies, in combination with multi-messenger approaches, have significantly improved our knowledge on neuron–astrocyte communication.

For this Special Issue, we welcome submissions in the form of original research articles and reviews providing insights into neuron–astrocyte interactions in various models, covering various aspects of brain function and pathology, including neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, ALS), epilepsy, stroke, and neuroinflammatory conditions. This issue will place special emphasis on studies that highlight the dynamic interactions between neurons and astrocytes by exploring the emerging molecular heterogeneity of astrocytes.
