In practice he deals with patients with chronic lung diseases (asthma and COPD), patients with allergies and, recently, patients with COVID 19. His scientific interests concern the impact of the environmental (mainly air) pollutants on human health. Dear Colleagues,
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Coronavirus infection can cause mild symptoms such as a sore throat, cough, and fever. More than half of the infected people contract the disease but do not show any symptoms. However, in some cases COVID-19 can be severe and lead to lung disease and breathing problems. At the beginning of February 2021, the disease was confirmed in over 104 million people worldwide, and more than 2 million died of it. We are currently unable to predict if an infected person will become seriously ill. The uncertainty about people’s vulnerability to this infection causes exceptional psychological stress, further compounded by recommendations of social isolation, quarantine, or a significant burden at work, especially for medical personnel standing on the front line of the fight against the virus. Teams of scientists and physicians around the world are looking for answers to the question of why SARS-COV-2 was transmitted to humans. What promotes infection and what protects against it?
This Special Issue will focus on presenting the results of clinical and epidemiological studies on the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on human health, with a particular focus on the role of environmental factors, during the global COVID-19 pandemic.
