Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Refrigeration systems have become crucial in a wide range of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration applications in several areas, ranging from food and air conditioning to health care, industry, and energy. These systems consume about 20% of the overall electricity used worldwide. Therefore, the research and development of new technologies for refrigeration and heat pump systems is essential to improving the efficiency of the systems.

Replacing high-global-warming-potential (GWP) refrigerants is also a challenge in the field. These new low-GWP fluids must ensure that the energy efficiency of current refrigeration systems is not compromised and establish the modifications that are necessary for this.

Finally, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems must adapt to the use of new renewable energy sources, which are intermittent and must be improved.

The study and development of miniature refrigeration and climate conditioning systems based on vapor compression for small-scale applications have received wide interest in recent years due to their advantages compared with other available technologies, both active and passive. This paper identifies different applications and areas of opportunity, including electronic components and personal cooling, where small-scale vapor compression refrigeration systems are anticipated to play a key role in technological development. This paper presents the current state of the art, including applications, component designs, operating conditions, experiments, published results, etc. to describe the current status of small-scale vapor compression refrigeration and illustrate a perspective for the future of this technology.
