This study proposed an approach for the enhancement of coarse wool from a Romanian sheep breed—Țurcana—for its utilization as a sustainable and efficient thermal insulation material. The process involved washing with a non-polar solvent, to eliminate lanoline and impurities from the raw sheep wool, followed by an impregnation with a binder, dolomite, and copper nanoparticles. The structural and elemental changes were analyzed using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The antimicrobial effects of copper nanoparticles were analyzed on two bacterial strains. The proposed enhancement process creates a barrier against harmful biodeterioration activities by bacteria. Highly sensitive electrochemical biosensors for biogenic amine (BA) detection were developed using commercial screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) modified with a nanomaterial based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and redox mediator, Prussian Blue (PB) and amine oxidase enzymes. The nanocomposite material enables an enhancement of the analytical performances for hydrogen peroxide detection, which represents the byproduct of the enzymatic oxidation of the BAs. The developed biosensors were integrated with a miniaturized potentiostate and a wireless data transfer interface in a portable system. The system was used for the detection of polyamines in soil solutions collected with a low-volume suction lysimeter. Full article

Sodium lignosulphonate (NaLS) from spent sulfite liquor was purified by ultrafiltration, and the structure was confirmed by FTIR analysis. NaLS decreases water surface tension from 72.44 mN/m to 65.36 mN/m when its concentration increases from 0% to 1%. The critical aggregation concentration was determined using UV-Vis spectroscopy, and a value of 0.035% was obtained. NaLS (0.1%) was used as a cosurfactant in an oil-in-water emulsion prepared by a phase inversion method to encapsulate thyme essential oil. The formulation was stable for 24 h, with a droplet size of 154 nm and a polydispersity index value of 0.12. Full article

The starch–PCL blends are important from a practical point of view. Due to the hydrophobic nature of PCL, its blends with starch are immiscible. Therefore, these blends must be compatibilized to control the interface’s properties and the thermodynamic stability over time. A physical compatibilization solution, easier to scale up in industrial conditions, was attempted. The results showed better compatibility between the two tested polymers because of the grafted olefin polymer that eliminates the net difference between the in-contact phases, by creating an interface area, strengthening the multicomponent system and reducing the morphological defects as voids. This study focuses on the polyphenol levels and antioxidant activity in the water kefir beverage after 72 and 96 h of fermentation. The exopolysaccharides (dextran) were extracted from water kefir granules and characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Increasing the fermentation time induced a significant increase both in polyphenol content, with more than 100% for each of the polyphenol classes investigated, and in antioxidant activity. The kefir grain accumulated higher levels of dextran. The tribiotic characteristics of water kefir, determined by the combination of prebiotics (polyphenols and polysaccharides) with probiotics and bioactive microbial metabolites, are enhanced after 96 h of fermentation. The current work presents a sustainable, environmentally friendly method for lignin extraction by applying deep eutectic solvents (DES), which are biodegradable. The Solid-DES extraction (SDESE) method of recovering lignin from reeds is presented. DES based on betaine hydrochloride and lactic acid (BeHCl, LA) was prepared and applied in SDESE at a ratio of 1:20 wt %. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to characterize the materials. The DES-extracted lignin (DEL) from the reeds exhibited an interesting structure due to the rearrangement of syringyl, guaiacyl, and parahydroxyphenyl units that occurred as a result of DES breaking the initial raw material structure. Sulfite liquor is the by-product of wood chips treatment. An alternative method for recovering the carbonaceous components from sulfite liquor was investigated. A 3% CS suspension surprisingly incorporated almost all the carbon–sulfite phase in an aerogel system rising up at the surface of a beige liquid phase. The resulting solid and liquid phases were analytically characterized usingTEM-EDX, XRD, FTIR, ICP-OES, and UV-Vis methods, respectively. The TEM-EDX analysis revealed nanoparticles and microneedles with high C, O, Na, and S contents ionotropically adsorbed by CS, with this new hybrid material appearing as a biopolymer–carbon–metal nanocomposite aerogel with potential adsorbent, catalytic, and/or semiconductive properties. The valorization potential of lignin-rich residual red liquor, derived from wood processing for cellulose manufacturing, was investigated through two distinct experimental pathways: a slow pyrolysis and a catalytic pyrolysis process. The biochar quality and pyrolysis oil composition obtained after each process were studied and compared. A nickel-based alumina-supported catalyst was proposed for the catalytic pyrolysis process, highlighting a capacity for deoxygenating aromatic compounds present in the pyrolysis oil, favoring the formation of furan and alkylated benzene compounds. On the other hand, the use of a catalytic process led to a decrease in surface area for the obtained biochar. Full article

The present work focused on the synthesis and characterization of scaffold type biomaterials based on calcium silicate doped with magnesium ions for bone regeneration with potential applications in tissue engineering. Starting from the idea that calcium silicate, with a scaffold type structure, presents relatively weak mechanical properties and a fast degradation rate, it was considered to dope it with magnesium ions to obtain materials with improved properties from mechanical and biological points of view, which can be an alternative to the classical methods of bone regeneration. Magnesium was selected because it plays an important role in the human body, maintaining bone health, and even more it promotes the process of osteogenesis. Therefore, in this study, scaffolds based on calcium silicate doped with magnesium ions were obtained by replicating a polymer sponge. Full article

This study’s objective was to assess pullulan, in the form of pullulan acetate, as a matrix for senotherapeutics delivery. Polymeric nanoparticles loaded with various senotherapeutics (metformin, quercitin, kaempferol, curcumin, and luteolin) were prepared via nanoprecipitation or double emulsion methods using pullulan acetate as a biodegradable polymeric matrix. Quercitin, kaempferol, curcumin, and luteolin nanoparticles showed good yield (<70%), satisfactory values of entrapment efficiency (<60%), and nanometric sizes ranging between 205 and 270 nm, with narrow dispersity and good stability at 4 °C. The formulations demonstrated that pullulan showed great potential for producing nanoparticles with application in senotherapeutics delivery. Full article

This paper presents a method for monitoring food freshness and quality through the early detection of biogenic amines, which are indicators of food spoilage/degradation. The urge to monitor food quality has led to a growing interest in the detection of toxic compounds, such as biogenic amines (BAs), as chemical indicators of food degradation by using different bioanalytical tools. The bioanalytical platform includes several parts and modules useful for food hazard evaluation. This paper presents how electrochemical and spectrometric detection works for biogenic amine monitoring in food and how the communication interface provides useful data. Full article

Proteogenomics is a recently developed omics application, adding enhancing the sensitivity of proteomics, and thus making possible the detection of proteome markers in very tiny amounts of samples. Even if the filed developed only in the last 10 years, the technology is very intensely applied in clinical diagnostics, and more recently, efforts are made to use it in non-clinical, in vitro and in vivo studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the applicability of single-plex and multiplex assays in the evaluation of proteome changes generated in vitro by the exposure to several standard compounds. The extracts demonstrated weak cytotoxic effects. The detection of cytokines Performing the same assays on tissue lysates permitted only the detection of low levels of cytokines. Full article

Microalgae cultivation is a promising approach for sustainable CO2 fixation. This work describes the optimization of a laboratory-scale experimental model for microalgae cultivation under CO2 supplementation. The experimental model was developed using a stirred clear glass reactor, white LED strips, connection system caps with three ports, tubes, valves, regulators, and N2-CO2 compressed gas cylinder. Three microalgae strains were used: Raphidocelis subcapitata ATCC22662, Desmodesmus communis NIVA-CHL 7, and Chlorella sorokiniana NIVA-CHL 176. The appropriate medium for cultivation of each of these strains was selected. The optimized experimental model demonstrated the positive influence of CO2 supplementation on microalgae growth, particularly for Chlorella sorokiniana. Full article

This article presents the microwave-assisted extraction of biosilica from common reed (Phragmites australis) biomass and the utilization of the resulting aqueous extract to enrich porous ceramic granules based on diatomaceous earth and bentonite from white wine cleaning. The enriched porous ceramic granule generated a solution of soluble silicon that was +23.4 ± 2.2 more concentrated than the porous ceramic granules not enriched with reed extract. The water reactivity of Si-O-Si groups is higher in the polysilicic acid formed via the polycondensation of silicic acid extracted from reed, compared to the Si-O-Si group from diatomaceous earth or bentonite. This paper investigates the acidification of eggshells of different origins with acetic acid. The acidification process was investigated for conventional and organic eggshells generated from the production of liquid eggs in the food industry and hatched eggshells from egg incubators. The acidified eggshell materials were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results demonstrate that each type of investigated eggshell generates different nanostructures due to slight variations in their composition and this indicates potential applications: as a source of calcium supplements or to produce a snow-melting agent or CO2 adsorbent.
