Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Whitefly (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) infestations impair plant fitness and have become well known for being efficient vectors of plant viruses that cause severe damage to crops. Whitefly-transmitted viruses include begomoviruses (more than 400 species), criniviruses, torradoviruses, carlaviruses, and ipomoviruses. Bemisia tabaci, now recognized as a complex of cryptic species, and Trialeurodes vaporariorum are the most important whitefly vectors, but a few other whitefly species have also been described. Previously limited to tropical areas, these insects have expanded their geographic distribution to subtropical and Mediterranean regions. As a consequence, a growing number of novel or emerging viral diseases, strongly impacting crop production, are being described.

In this Special Issue, we will focus on the most recent advances in the understanding of the life cycle of whitefly-transmitted viruses, including mechanisms governing whitefly–virus interactions, viral factors influencing the transmission efficiency, replication, and localization of viruses in the vector, and whitefly–virus co-evolution issues. Virus effects on insect viability and fitness will also be included. Reports on the discovery of new viral species or genera vectored by whiteflies are also welcome.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Viruses is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
