Dear Colleagues,
With the rise in locavores, the tourism and hospitality industry has taken notice of this megatrend, which is also positioned as crucial for sustainability. Yet, the structure of the food and agriculture sector (suggesting this language since some it may appeal to a larger group of scholars and is more broadly consistent with the language used throughout much of Canada and the world) industry, especially in North America, often frustrates the efforts by chefs to source locally grown foods. This is particularly the case for those working in international chain hotels, restaurants, and cruise lines who are tied into procurement arrangements. Another trend shows that a number of economically viable farmers has decreased in North America since the early 2000s, and that key elements have been replaced by a corporately controlled and managed food system. Food system, hospitality, and tourism-related stakeholders such as farmers and other primary producers, processors, retailers, restaurateurs, and hoteliers, and other industry professionals as well as interest groups and governments, are intrinsically linked and are faced with major challenges in terms of defining and implementing sustainable solutions for local food consumption, production, and promotion.
For this purpose, this Special Issue will focus on the following topics:
- Food sustainbility;
- Social sustainability;
- Evidence of successful local food systems;
- Local food value chains—case studies and other treatments;
- Local food system governance; private and public roles and impacts;
- Quality assurance, regulation, and standards for local food;
- The role of social justice in locavorism;
- Local food certification and labeling;
- Contract farming;
- Farmers markets;
- Attitudes and perceptions of hospitality professionals toward local food use;
- Linkages between hospitality and civic agriculture;
- Consumer perception of local food consumption;
- Local food shopping habits and attitudes ;
- Healthy food consumption;
- Farm tourism;
- Tension between international trade and local food promotion;
- Food literacy and the tourist locavores;
- Excursion travel and local food systems;
- Local food promotion strategies.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
