Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The emergence of the Internet and electronic commerce raises many new research issues. The study of electronic commerce focuses on stimulating and disseminating research into all facets of electronic commerce—from research to core enabling technologies. It consists of assessing and understanding the implications of these technologies on societies, economies, businesses, and individuals. This has forced businesses to change the way in which they conduct their commercial transactions with their end users. Sustainable electronic commerce indicates a vision with a dynamic balance among three mutually interdependent elements. Sustainable electronic commerce, or green electronic commerce, is an enterprise that has minimal negative impact on the global or local environment, community, society, or economy. Electronic commerce for sustainability enriches the study of subjects of sustainability and electronic commerce, which drives the green economy for global business.

This Special Issue aims to discuss the connection between sustainability, human beings, and electronic commerce, from theoretical, methodological, and disciplinary perspectives. We invite you to contribute to this issue by submitting comprehensive reviews, case studies, and research articles. In particular, electronic commerce methods specifically devised, adapted, or tailored to address problems in sustainability applications, or sustainability methods that have been demonstrated to be particularly effective at solving electronic commerce related problems, are welcome.

In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the development of a new business model, “Live Streaming + Ecommerce”, which is a new method for commercial sales that shares the goal of sustainable economic growth (SDG 8). As information technology finds its way into the digital lives of internet users, the real-time and interactive nature of live streaming has overturned the traditional entertainment experience of audio and video content, moving towards a more nuanced division of labor with multiple applications. This study used a portable eye tracker to collect eye movement information from participants watching Facebook Live, with 31 participants who had experience using the live streaming platform. The four eye movement indicators, namely, latency of first fixation (LFF), duration of first fixation (DFF), total fixation durations (TFD), and the number of fixations (NOF), were used to analyze the distribution of the visual attention in each region of interest (ROI) and explore the study questions based on the ROIs. The findings of this study were as follows: (1) the fixation order of the ROIs in the live ecommerce platform differed between participants of different sexes; (2) the DFF of the ROIs in the live ecommerce platform differed among participants of different sexes; and (3) regarding the ROIs of participants on the live ecommerce platform, participants of different sexes showed the same attention to the live products according to the TFD and NOF eye movement indicators. This study explored the visual search behaviors of existing consumers watching live ecommerce and provides the results as a reference for operators and researchers of live streaming platforms. The motivation of this study is that after the COVID-19 epidemic, museum exhibition visits have also been significantly affected. The purpose of this research is to better understand the visual cognition of visitors, so as to improve the application of physical field or online exhibitions. Currently, no research is available on the differences in the visitor’s viewing and cognitive process with eye movements sequence analysis that stem from the exhibition planning and design of different museums. This study tracks and analyzes the eye movement trajectories of visitors and studies its relation to learning and cognition and finds the key to influencing cognition through behavioral sequence analysis of displayed content. The results show that those interested in the displayed content have better cognitive performance, are immersed in reading text, and have a substantial shift in eye movement. Contrarily, those not interested in the displayed content are distracted and often turn their attention back to the title of the content. In this study, eye movement and fixation are indicators that can be used as a reference for the future design of displays to improve the effectiveness of presenting information to a visitor. Furthermore, this research can also provide future applications in integrating the virtual world and cognitive information, in the application of AR, VR, or metaverse environment, to provide people’s cognition of rapid information in the virtual environment. This study takes the city of Taichung, Taiwan, as the research area, combines the survey results about the demand for residential houses for the next year, and uses relevant parameters and data of real price registration as the prediction results. In this study, eight types of school district features (such as teachers and students of secondary and elementary schools) and five types of air pollution features are selected and processed with a data mining method to discover the total transactions of real estate properties in various districts of Taichung. The results of K-means clustering and decision tree classification reveal that the four districts of the old Taichung City, namely, Beitun District, North District, Xitun District, and Nantun District, have houses meeting the conditions of egg yolk districts; houses in the old Taichung County have attributes of egg white districts. The results of decision tree classification show that the total price is the most important attribute influencing egg yolk and egg white districts. Full article

With the development of high-speed wireless LAN, the use of multimedia-type digital contents is increasing significantly even in the smart home environment. Therefore, it is very important to efficiently process and manage the use of digital content in the form of multimedia. In order to effectively process multimedia digital contents in the wireless LAN environment of a smart home, a server higher than the PC level is required. There is also a need for a support system that can exchange multimedia digital contents between clients of home appliances. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a Smart Home Digital Contents Management and Operation System (SDCMOS) that effectively processes and supports multimedia digital contents. This system is designed to effectively process real-time multimedia processing in home service in a wireless LAN environment. In addition, it was made possible to efficiently search multimedia information directly from the home server. SDCMOS is designed to be usable in fields such as biomedical image search, history museums, art exhibition halls, tourism information, geographic information, and e-commerce. Full article

Today’s online voting systems pose security concerns and cannot be used for public elections, while offline voting costs significantly more. As a result, a decentralized electronic voting system is emerging, backed by blockchain technology. With blockchain technology applied to online voting, the system can guarantee transparency and confidentiality because individual voter information and aggregate information are stored in a distributed fashion. Due to its decentralized nature, a blockchain-based voting system is more secure than the existing central server-based online voting system. In this study, an Ethereum-based electronic voting system was developed. This system resolves the issue of fraudulent voting by enhancing the safety and reliability of the electronic voting system. Forecasting the Potential Number of Influenza-like Illness Cases by Fusing Internet Public Opinion

As influenza viruses mutate rapidly, a prediction model for potential outbreaks of influenza-like illnesses helps detect the spread of the illnesses in real time. In order to create a better prediction model, in this study, in addition to using the traditional hydrological and atmospheric data, features, such as popular search keywords on Google Trends, public holiday information, population density, air quality indices, and the numbers of COVID-19 confirmed cases, were also used to train the model in this research. Furthermore, Random Forest and XGBoost were combined and used in the proposed prediction model to increase the prediction accuracy. The training data used in this research were the historical data taken from 2016 to 2021. In our experiments, different combinations of features were tested. The results show that features, such as popular search keywords on Google Trends, the numbers of COVID-19 confirmed cases, and air quality indices can improve the outcome of the prediction model. The evaluation results showed that the error rate between the predicted results and the actual number of influenza-like cases form Week 15 to Week 18 fell to less than 5%. The outbreak of COVID-19 in Taiwan began in Week 19 and resulted in a sharp rise in the number of clinic or hospital visits by patients of influenza-like illnesses. After that, from Week 21 to Week 26, the error rate between the predicted and actual numbers of influenza-like cases in the later period dropped down to 13%. It can be confirmed from the actual experimental results in this research that the use of the ensemble learning prediction model proposed in this research can accurately predict the trend of influenza-like cases. This study mainly probed into the factors influencing consumers’ OGB intention on community e-commerce platforms, built models that included facets of conformity behaviors, perceived risks, customer engagement, and OGB intention, and focused on whether there is a mediating effect on customer engagement and an interference effect on perceived risks. The subjects of this study were consumers with OGB experience on community e-commerce platforms. The results show that conformity behaviors have a significant positive impact on customer engagement and OGB intention; thus, when customers have insufficient information or relevant knowledge of OGB, the comments or recommendations of their relatives and friends would influence their engagement and OGB intention. Moreover, this study found that customer engagement has a complete mediating effect, which indicates that conformity behaviors can influence OGB intention through customer engagement. In addition, this study found that perceived risks have an interference effect, meaning that when consumers sense high risks, the OGB intention is weakened through customer engagement. This shows that in the OGB organizations of the community e-commerce platforms, it is recommended that more attention be paid to customer engagement; it is also a topic worthy of discussion in practical business applications.
