Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The construction, development and renewal of railway infrastructures are necessary for a sustainable economy to continue the regular and safe transportation of passengers and reliable freight transport. For this, it is essential to operate railway lines with appropriate quality, which will enable an extensive and competitive alternative to an ecologically advantageous mode of transport.

This Special Issue is dedicated to exploring and advancing the principles of sustainability within the domain of railway systems, encompassing construction, operation and transportation. As the global community grapples with the imperative to mitigate environmental impacts and promote resilience in the transportation sector, this compilation of research papers provides a comprehensive examination of innovative strategies, technologies and practices aimed at fostering sustainability in railway infrastructure.

The first issue addresses Sustainable Railway Construction, shedding light on environmentally responsible construction methodologies, eco-friendly materials and sustainable design approaches. Contributions within this domain examine novel materials, construction techniques and sustainable infrastructure design, with a keen focus on minimizing ecological impact and optimizing long-term resilience.

The second thematic focus of the issue centers on Sustainable Railway Operation, exploring advancements in energy-efficient operations, intelligent traffic management systems and predictive maintenance protocols. By examining the operational aspects of railways through a sustainability lens, the research presented in this section aims to enhance operational efficiency while minimizing the ecological footprint of railway services.

The third issue investigates Sustainable Railway Transportation, addressing the broader implications of rail travel in the context of environmental sustainability. Researchers in this domain investigate modal shift dynamics, intermodal connectivity and the role of railways in fostering a more sustainable and integrated transportation network. Insights from this section contribute to the development of policies and practices that encourage environmentally conscious transportation choices.

We look forward to your contributions to this Special Issue. Original research articles and reviews will provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of sustainable railway systems and offer valuable insights into the future trajectory of the field. By fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities within Sustainable Railway Construction, Operation and Transportation, this collection aims to catalyze informed discussions, inspire further research and, ultimately, contribute to the realization of a more sustainable and resilient railway sector.

Kind regards,

Dr. Jozef Gasparik

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Assessing the technical condition of a railway track throughout its service life is crucial to ensuring functional safety. However, it is important to note that current approaches have theoretical and practical gaps that require attention. The purpose of this study is to discuss the reconceptualization of an integrated approach to assess changes in the technical condition of railway tracks caused by rolling stock over their service life. Improving existing systems for assessing the condition of the track can be achieved by modifying the model concept and, subsequently, the measurement and assessment procedures. This paper presents an alternative method for addressing technical issues related to the monitoring and diagnosis of railway tracks, with a particular focus on natural phenomena: energy transfer by elastic waves. The primary aim of this work is to propose an approach for designing a ‘closed’ measurement system that enables tracking of the cause-and-effect relationship. This system takes into account both the elastic dissipative characteristics of the track–rolling stock interaction and the influence of the dynamics of various components in the ‘train-track’ system. As one of the most widely used modes of transportation worldwide, the standardization work of railways is of great significance for improving operational efficiency, enhancing service quality, and promoting sustainable development. Through research on railway enterprises, this paper proposes a standardization work solution applicable to railway enterprises of different sizes, which includes six steps. It is found that railway enterprises of different sizes can use the solution proposed in this study to carry out standardization work, but the results of different railway enterprises using this solution to carry out standardization work may be different, and the results of different units using this solution to carry out standardization work within the same railway enterprises are not comparable. Railway enterprises should strengthen cooperation and learn from each other’s advanced experience. Furthermore, the solution in this study can serve as a reference for different railway enterprises to carry out standardization work and contribute to the sustainable development of railway enterprises.
