Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Composite bridges, capable of exploiting the advantages of different building materials, have been widely used in practical engineering owing to their good structural performance and economy. Today, the composite bridge is one of the most important fields of development in bridge engineering. With the continuous development of the composite bridge, various structural forms, complex mechanical behaviors, intelligent construction, construction risk, and long-term service performance after operation have been subject to extensive research. Ascertaining the mechanical behaviors of the innovative structures of a composite bridge and evaluating their performance based on health monitoring are extremely important for ensuring operational safety throughout the life cycles of these bridges.

In view of the latest developments, this Special Issue aims to gather manuscripts on the recent scientific advancements in modelling, sensing, and evaluating the mechanical behavior of composite bridges.

For this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Design methods and theories for composite bridges;
  • Innovative structural forms and force characteristics of composite bridges;
  • Force transferring mechanisms and force characteristics of shear connectors of composite bridges;
  • Fatigue performance of composite bridges;
  • Innovative sensing technologies for composite bridges;

Response Characteristics of Irregular Continuous Rigid Frame Bridges with Long-Span and High-Rise Piers under Ground Motion Excitations with Different Fault Distances

An innovative seismic performance evaluation strategy for irregular rigid frame bridges with a long-span and high-rise piers under the action of ground motions with different fault distances is presented in this paper. A total of 129 mainshock records taken during the Wenchuan earthquake, from national seismic stations with different fault distances, were analyzed using statistical methods, to determine the attenuation characteristics of the intensity index of the Wenchuan earthquake records from the perspective of aseismic engineering, and the attenuation of the acceleration response spectrum is discussed. The Miaoziping Bridge on the Dujiangyan–Wenchuan Expressway, which was damaged in the Wenchuan earthquake, is taken as the analysis background; two sets of samples for long-span continuous rigid frame bridges with different pier heights are constructed, to discuss the seismic response characteristics of continuous long-span rigid frame bridges; and representative values for the natural periods of these two bridge structural groups are subsequently compared and analyzed. After the peak responses for various bridges with various pier heights are determined through a response spectrum analysis under the action of ground motions with different fault distances, and the surfaces for the obtained peak responses are fitted and the response characteristics for different fault distances are discussed. It is shown in the results that the seismic response characteristics of the continuous rigid frame bridges with long-span and high-rise piers were significantly different under the action of the ground motions with different fault distances, and the seismic responses of these two bridge groups were distinctly larger under the action of near-fault ground motions. Furthermore, based on the above research, suggestions for the pier arrangement and bridge site selection for continuous rigid frame bridges with long-span and high-rise piers are also discussed. The results of this paper also provide some theoretical guidance for the sustainable development of bridges with long-span and high-rise piers, from the perspective of bridge seismic response characteristics. Prediction and Early Warning of Extreme Winds for High-Speed Railway Bridge Construction Using Machine-Learning Methods

Measuring the impact of extreme winds is important in high-speed railway bridge construction to avoid the risk of engineering accidents. This study presents an early-warning framework for high-speed railway (HSR) bridge construction under extreme wind conditions, using a long-span continuous beam bridge constructed in a typhoon-prone area as a case study. Specifically, on-site wind environment measurements during a typhoon are utilized, and parameters such as fluctuating wind turbulence intensity, gust factor, turbulence integral scale, and power spectral density are employed to characterize the wind environment. Multi-step prediction of gust wind speed during the bridge construction is performed using the hybrid Back Propagation-Genetic Algorithm (BP-GA). Hierarchical warnings and control actions are proposed and implemented based on the prediction results. The analysis results of wind parameters revealed a discrepancy between the measured and specified typhoon turbulence intensities, with the windward turbulence intensity being lower than specified. The longitudinal average gust factor exceeded the transverse value. The prediction curve based on the BP-GA algorithm closely resembles the actual curve, meeting accuracy requirements. Notably, the one-step prediction provided the most accurate results. Based on the predicted wind speed trend for the upcoming half-hour, appropriate hierarchical warnings and control measures were conducted. Full article
