Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Higher education in Post-COVID-19 times is challenged by numerous factors. Bridging the gap between academia and industry and promoting meaningful research towards the promotion of UN Sustainable Development Goals are viable responses to a new paradigm shift in higher education. The purpose of this Special Issue is to promote scientific dialogue for the social impact of higher education and its contribution to the vision of digital transformation.

We are inviting multidisciplinary research related to four significant pillars and topics:

Pillar 1. Foundations of SDG research and digital transformation in higher education:

  • Interpretation of SDGs in the context of HE;
  • Theoretical approaches to value based HE;
  • Foundations of digital transformation as it is applied in HE;

Pillar 2. Novel theoretical models, frameworks, and approaches for the integration of SDGs in higher education:

  • Multidisciplinary scientific models for adoption and utilization of SDGs in HE;
  • Integration of pedagogies in a sustainable digital transformation model in HE;
  • Technology-enhanced higher education;

Pillar 3. Digital transformation in all aspects of the value chain in higher education:

  • Novel approaches in curriculum design;
  • Novel insights into faculty development plans in HE;
  • Promotion of transparent faculty assessment methods;
  • Integration of open knowledge and open research in HE;
  • Digital transformation in HE for bold social footprint and impact;
  • Academia–industry collaboration;
  • Skills and competencies management;
  • Student-centric developmental initiatives in HE;

Pillar 4. Higher education out of the box: new business models and new educational models:

  • Integration of research in academic contexts into society;
  • Multiplying the added value of innovation in HE toward social inclusive sustainable development;
  • Higher education–industry collaborations;
  • Emerging models for training delivery and competence building;

Pillar 5: Case studies and indicative projects: dissemination of key outcomes.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

New ways of modernizing professional development programs (hereafter PDs) focus on the acquisition of new teaching methods and techniques through hands-on opportunities provided to teachers, thereby enabling them to practice and reflect on the knowledge gained. Moreover, the new vision of reform and sustainability in education emphasizes the development of sustainable PDs that resist disruptive factors, increase teachers’ commitment, and ensure more sustainable development across children’s lifespans. This study explores the impact of a piloted sustainable PD on the development of 16 teachers and head teachers’ attitudes about assessment practices, professional growth, and leadership skills. Qualitative data collected in the form of interviews, post-PD surveys, and reflections were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Findings indicate that the confidence in creating assessments and rubrics of participants in their different positions increased, and their ability to provide their students with engaging, sustainably developed assessments that improved higher-order thinking skills was also enhanced. The findings in this study demonstrated the need to develop within teachers the awareness that they can individually contribute towards a more sustainably developed classroom and learning environment. Although participants did make some changes to their classroom-based practices, these changes could not be well-maintained as they were limited by the high stakes involved in varying the structure of mandatory assessments required in the public education sector. It is hoped that the findings of this study can be used as a model for the development of sustainable PDs in education. Full article

Private colleges play an important role in the cause of education, explore the research landscape and trends in development, and provide theoretical support and management practices for high-quality, healthy, and sustainable development. Based on a bibliometric analysis, and employing techniques such as scientometrics, social network analysis, a two-dimensional matrix, and textual analysis, this study analyzed the research literature on private colleges in the CSSCI database from 1998 to 2021, along with relevant policies from the legal literature database. This analysis addressed the dimensions of spatial and temporal distribution, author cooperation, primary journals, and research topics. The results showed a significant increase in the number of research papers published by private colleges, although with an uneven regional distribution of research development and differing influence and attention. The primary research forces of private colleges were mainly concentrated in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions. For scientific research cooperation, several core research groups were formed. According to the content analysis of relevant policies, the research of private universities has gone through three evolutionary stages: the lead period, the development period, and the adjustment period. Scholars in the lead period focused on learning about the advanced systems and concepts of foreign private colleges, while conducting research from a macro perspective. During the development period, the focus was on researching the management modes of Chinese private colleges from the medium point of view, while exploring different operating modes. During the adjustment period, private colleges research has returned to the macro level, exploring the classified management and governance of private colleges and re-examining China’s private colleges.
