Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Transport-related pollutants are a major source of air pollution in urban areas around the world, mainly including vehicle exhaust emissions and non-exhaust emissions. Vehicle exhaust emissions stem from the combustion of fossil fuels in motor vehicles, whereas non-exhaust emissions from vehicles are produced by brake, tyre, and road wear, as well as the resuspension of road dust. These pollutants cause a range of health problems, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurological problems. In addition to that, these pollutants also have adverse effects on the environment, leading to climate change and causing harm to ecosystems. As a result, it is essential to understand the underlying mechanisms behind the formation of both exhaust and non-exhaust emissions, which is beneficial to developing effective strategies to mitigate the transport-related pollutants.

This Special Issue aims to collect original research papers focused on transport-related pollutants using experimental, numerical simulation, and theoretical analysis. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Experimental studies on the characteristics of exhaust and non-exhaust emissions from various types of vehicles, including particle size distribution, chemical composition, and emission factors.
  • Numerical simulations of the dispersion of transport-related pollutants in urban environments, taking into account the effects of traffic flow, meteorological conditions, and urban morphology.
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of emission control measures, such as low-emission zones, vehicle scrappage programs, and public transportation promotion, in reducing both exhaust and non-exhaust emissions.
  • Identification of the sources and formation mechanisms of transport-related pollutants.
  • Analysis of regulatory policy for controlling transport-related emissions, including the effectiveness of existing regulations and the development of new policies to reduce transport-related emissions.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
