Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nowadays, the global annual production of plastics is almost 400Mt and it is estimated to double within the next two decades. One of the major environmental problems is how to deal with plastic pollution and decrease its environmental impacts, especially at the end of life. In recent years, many research works have focused on two main end-of-life scenarios as a solution: the first scenario focuses on the development of biodegradable materials, and the second one focuses on the design of recyclable materials. These scenarios involve the whole life cycle of polymer materials as follows:

  • The conception and design cycle: in order to elaborate biodegradable polymer materials and composites or to design new materials that are easily recyclable at their end of life;
  • The service life cycle: to control the performance in use and the lifetime durability of the elaborated materials. It is well known that the use of additives is indispensable in polymer materials, and in this context, the use of environmentally friendly additives turns out to be very important for the developed biomaterials;
  • The end-of-life cycle: both scenarios (biodegradation, recycling) should be developed, improved and validated at the end of life.

This Special Issue of Polymers entitled “Polymers’ Life Cycle” will cover the current research involved in the whole life cycle of polymers, including the elaboration of biopolymers and biocomposites, the development of bio-additives and end-of-life issues and solution propositions.
