Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is said that for improving the imaging quality of telescopes, Galileo Galilei acquired the skills of contemporary lens making. This exemplifies the importance of optics manufacturing for advances in research and technology. Nowadays, optical components and systems have to be adapted to modern needs and applications, as is the case, for example, in UV optics, laser technology, and microsystems. Hence, novel approaches and methods are required for expanding the possibilities of optics manufacturing. For example, plasma-, ion beam-, and laser-based techniques, as well as a number of other physical or chemical processes, were developed recently.

The aim of this Special Issues is to provide a platform for exchanging such pioneering ideas and novel approaches in optics manufacturing. This includes new insights in tool–material interactions, manufacturing-induced surface modifications, and the contamination of optical media, i.e., mainly glass. This Special Issue is thus intended to be a survey of both classical and promising novel manufacturing methods and approaches as well as an exploration of the corresponding or underlying mechanisms on the work piece surface.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Micromachines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Abstract
In 1850, Austen Henry Layard discovered an approximately 3000-year-old, simple optical lens in Nimrud, Northern Iraq—the Nimrud lens, aka the Layard lens [...] Full article
