Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) have the characteristics of strong treatment capacity, high solid‒liquid separation efficiency, good effluent quality, small footprint, and simple operation and management. Since the 1990s, MBRs have been used in urban wastewater treatment, reclaimed water reuse, industrial wastewater treatment, micro-polluted drinking water purification, and landfill leachate treatment. At present, more and more in-depth studies are required into MBR theory (including the mechanism of the removal of pollutants, the formation mechanism of membrane fouling, the relationship between the sludge production rate and the operating conditions, and the metabolic characteristics of the microorganisms in the MBR and the effect of the microorganisms in the MBR on effluent quality and sludge activity, etc.) and application (including actual wastewater treatment, optimization of the process and operating conditions, prevention and control of membrane fouling, process economics analyses, and the development of novel MBRs, etc.).

For this Special Issue, authors are invited to submit original articles and reviews on the theory and application of the MBR. Contributions may involve the following: (i) the mechanism of the removal of pollutants from wastewater by the MBR; (ii) the mechanism and prevention of membrane fouling; (iii) the optimization of the process flow and operating conditions of the MBR and the optimization mechanism; (iv) economic analysis of the MBR process, and (v) development of novel MBRs.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Membranes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
