Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

The present Special Issue is linked to the symposium E1, also entitled “Advanced Materials for Transport Applications”, which will take place within the framework of the Euromat 2019 conference held in Stockholm, Sweden, from September 1st to 5th, 2019 and cover the whole field of materials science and technology. Within this framework, our own symposium addresses questions related to the use of advanced materials in the transport industry, which includes the aerospace, automotive, railway and maritime sector. The symposium is the 6th of its kind at Euromat and thus continues a series which originated at Euromat 2009 and continues until today.

To set a thematic focus beyond the area of application, we are specifically looking for contributions on:

  • Additive manufacturing for transport applications (associated Guest Editors: Lehmhus, von Hehl);
  • Hybrid engineering materials and structures for multimaterial designs (von Hehl, Alderliesten, Hausmann);
  • Composite materials and lightweight design (Hausmann, Asp);
  • Intelligent materials, structures and systems, functional materials and structures (Lehmhus, Asp);
  • Simulation, modeling, optimization, and Big Data applications for process discovery (Kayvantash, Hohe);
  • Advances in metal casting technology for transport applications (Lehmhus).

Despite the close link, submission to the Special Issue is not limited to Euromat 2019 contributors—we explicitly welcome external submissions. Moreover, the focal topics listed above are not meant to exclude articles from additional areas, as long as a link to applications in the transport sector is there. Similarly, we do not intend to limit the Special Issue’s focus to structural materials only but will endeavor to include studies on functional materials with relevance for applications in transportation, too. However, this only includes any moving application and not civil engineering of stationary infrastructure.

We are looking forward to receiving your submissions and would like to kindly invite you to address any of the guest editors in case of further questions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Nanotechnology has received increasing attention and is being applied in the transportation vehicle field. With their unique physical and chemical characteristics, nanomaterials can significantly enhance the safety and durability of transportation vehicles. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art of nanotechnology and how this technology can be applied in improving the comfort, safety, and speed of transportation vehicles. Moreover, this paper systematically examines the recent developments and applications of nanotechnology in the transportation vehicle industry, including nano-coatings, nano filters, carbon black for tires, nanoparticles for engine performance enchantment and fuel consumption reduction. Also, it introduces the main challenges for broader applications, such as environmental, health and safety concerns. Since several nanomaterials have shown tremendous performance and have been theoretically researched, they can be potential candidates for applications in future environmental friendly transportation vehicles. This paper will contribute to further sustainable research and greater potential applications of environmentally friendly nanomaterials in healthier transportation vehicles to improve the transportation industry around the globe.
