Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Diagnostic and therapeutic evolutions have always had a major impact on global society. For an extended period, clinical examination served as the foundation for screening. The ability to diagnose pathologies at the cellular level was expanded by the development of the microscope. The late 20th century marked the evolution of molecular biology, enabling the genetic profiling of pathological entities. The incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) in screening and diagnostics is one of the most recent developments in medicine. The same is true for oral disease screening and diagnosis, where AI-integrated digital technologies like image-based analysis have grown in popularity. Deep convoluted neural networks are fed with a comprehensive set of clinical, radiographic, and histopathological images and have been shown to have accuracy rivaling that of a senior diagnostician. The present Special Issue intends to focus on such novel innovations in the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases. In addition to articles focusing on assessing the efficacy of such novel tools, this Special Issue also welcomes articles exploring their potential drawbacks, including ethical and technical challenges involved in the integration of such innovations in routine clinical practice.
