Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Mitochondria, also known as the "powerhouses of cells", are the hub for around 1500 proteins and perform a diverse array of functions including oxidative phosphorylation, TCA cycle, amino acid, and fatty acid metabolism, calcium, and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) signaling. Remarkably, only 13 proteins within the mitochondrial milieu are mitochondrial DNA encoded and the rest are nuclear-transcribed, synthesized in the cytoplasm, and imported into the mitochondria. Functional reprogramming of the mitochondrial pathway has been linked to a wide range of human health problems, including cancer, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular and neurological diseases. This Special Issue, "New Insights into Mitochondria in Human Health and Disease", aims to provide a comprehensive platform for researchers in the field to publish their research results about complex issues surrounding mitochondrial genetic and biological alterations and how they affect people's health. Papers focused on the molecular mechanisms causing mitochondrial functional alterations, their role in aging and illnesses, and the development of potential diagnostic, therapeutics, and preventive strategies are sought for this Special Issue.

Key topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Mitochondrial Genetics: Understanding the genetic basis of mitochondrial disorders and their inheritance patterns.
  • Mitochondrial-Targeted Therapies: Highlighting emerging therapies and potential interventions to restore mitochondrial function.
  • Bioenergetics and Metabolism: Investigating how mitochondrial functional alterations influences cellular energy production and metabolic pathways.
  • Mitochondrial Biomarkers: Identifying diagnostic and prognostic markers associated with mitochondrial disorders and malignancies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
