Dear Colleagues,
The immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that play a vital part in our body’s defense against infections. The immune system is composed of two major compartments, the innate and the adaptive immune system, which normally work in synergy to ensure proper immunity.
However, this immune system can malfunction in various manners, as it can, for example, be weakened, or acquired immune deficiency can occur. Both lead to immune system disorders that leave people vulnerable to infections. On the other hand, the immune system can also overreact, causing, for example, an allergic reaction or autoimmune disease.
Since the immune system plays a key and driving role in the development of cardiovascular diseases, several of these immune system disorders have already been shown to contribute to the development of various cardiovascular diseases, e.g., atherosclerosis and heart failure. However, many of these interactions and their underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In this Special Issue, we will collect manuscripts that provide novel insights into how immune system disorders contribute to cardiovascular diseases.
