Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

I am thrilled to announce the opening of this Special Issue, entitled “Nanochemistry in the Extracellular Space”.

The extracellular space hosts a multitude of soluble molecules crucial for regulating physiological processes in various organisms. Moreover, this space is densely populated with a heterogeneous collection of extracellular nanoparticles, effectively transforming it into a nanostructured system. These nanoparticles encompass biogenic entities, such as exomeres, lipoproteins, and extracellular vesicles, which facilitate intercellular, cross-species, and cross-kingdom transport processes and communication. Furthermore, the extracellular space serves as a conduit for both intentional and unintentional exogenous nano-guests. This includes drug delivery nanovectors, viruses, and pollutants like nanoplastics.

The current conceptual and methodological advances in extracellular nanoparticles revolve around the examination of individual nanoparticle classes, isolating them from the broader context of the extracellular space. However, this approach imposes significant limitations in addressing crucial questions and advancing the understanding of extracellular nanoparticles. Indeed, the extracellular space dynamism gives rise to collective phenomena, including the formation of biomolecular coronas, transient aggregation/adsorption, as well as kissing and fusion events.

This Special Issue fosters this vision and aims to collect papers that provide fresh insights into the physicochemical aspects of the extracellular space and the nanoparticles inhabiting it. Research papers, short reports, and compelling up-to-date reviews contributing to the study of the “collective emerging properties” of extracellular nanoparticles will be accepted.

Example topics include:

  • Advanced separation and characterization techniques for extracellular nanoparticles;
  • Biomolecular corona on nanoplastics;
  • Biosensors and analytical applications for extracellular nanoparticles;
  • Extracellular nanoparticle synthetic and hybrid mimics;
  • Interactions between extracellular nanoparticles (both synthetic and biogenic);
  • Physical chemistry of viral vectors.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
