Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the past few decades, the role of TSPO in human diseases has been elaborated upon. Numerous studies have demonstrated its involvement in cellular proliferation, cell death, steroidogenesis, inflammation, and cellular metabolism. These cellular functions appear to be relevant to human diseases, including cancer, neurodegeneration, endocrine dysfunctions, inflammatory diseases, and autoimmune diseases. Novel TSPO ligands, with variability in their selectivity and affinity to TSPO, have been synthesized. These ligands were used in experimental models of human diseases and in brain imaging to demonstrate brain gliosis as a marker for neurodegeneration or neuroinflammation. In the peripheral dimension it was found that some TSPO ligands suppress macrophage and microglia activation, indicating anti-inflammatory activity of these ligands.

Unfortunately, most of these studies are descriptive. There is an unmet need for the elucidation of the underlying mechanisms and pathways involved in the therapeutic effects of TSPO ligands. Furthermore, it is currently unclear as to whether the putative therapeutic effects are relevant to preventive treatments or to the management of already-pathological conditions.

Translational TSPO research is needed to discover new treatments for relevant human pathologies. The main feature of this Special Issue is the provision of open source sharing of significant studies in the field of TSPO that may advance the understanding of the role of TSPO in pathological conditions and the discovery of novel diagnostic technologies as well as TSPO-targeted therapeutics.

Topics in this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Key biological processes, such as cell cycle, DNA repair, apoptosis, autophagy, endocrinology, cellular death, cellular or tissue repair, and signaling pathways.
  • Molecular brain and peripheral pathologies.
  • TSPO in cancer.
  • TSPO ligands in the treatment of cancer, inflammation, neurodegeneration, and endocrine diseases.
  • Translational TSPO research.
  • TSPO ligands for the diagnosis of brain and peripheral diseases
  • High-throughput technologies: genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, microarray, next-generation sequencing, and other omics technologies in TSPO research.
  • Genomic and proteomic TSPO-related databases as well as applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
