Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Ocular chronic progressive diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, lead to vision impairment or even irreversible blindness. Inflammation, retinal barrier disruption, leakage, and neurodegeneration are hallmark characteristics of most of these chronic conditions. In the context of the eye, “neuroprotection” refers to strategies and interventions aimed at preserving and safeguarding the neural tissues and structures essential for vision. The primary goal of neuroprotection in the eye is to prevent or slow down the degeneration of neurons, particularly those in the retina and optic nerve, to maintain and protect visual function. Neuroprotective therapy is an urgent need in ophthalmology and remains challenging. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the involved complex mechanisms is essential for the development of new therapeutic strategies.

Therefore, this Special Issue invites manuscript submissions, including research and review papers, that update our knowledge on the molecular mechanisms of various neurodegenerative ocular diseases, focusing on new neuroprotective strategies or combined approaches that may hold significant potential for mitigating a spectrum of neurodegenerative ocular disorders and may lead to successful clinical applications.
