Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The choroid plexus forms an important physiological barrier, the blood–cerebrospinal fluid barrier, which physically separates the blood from the cerebrospinal fluid. Several neuroprotective roles are attributed to the choroid plexus. Cerebrospinal fluid secretion, which in its majority is assured by the choroid plexus, is important for neurological function by delivering some molecules like hormones and trophic factors to the brain. These molecules can be bloodborne or directly secreted into the cerebrospinal fluid by the choroid plexus. In addition, the choroid plexus prevents the passage of noxious compounds to the brain due to the presence of efflux transporters and tight junctions between epithelial cells. The choroid plexus also participates in the removal of brain waste metabolites and is an important regulator of the immune cell movement between blood and cerebrospinal fluid. The improper function of the choroid plexus transport system and secretory activity, as well as the impairment of barrier capabilities, are associated with disease states. This highlights the importance of exploring the role of the choroid plexus in neurological health.

This Special Issue aims to increase knowledge of how choroid plexus physiology impacts normal brain functioning. Reviews, original articles, and short communications that cover the topics of how the choroid plexus influences a disease state and how a disease state influences the choroid plexus physiology, as well as the impact of choroid plexus dysfunction on disease progression, are welcome in this Special Issue. In the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, molecules are the object of study.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
