Dear Colleagues,
A variety of approaches have been established to assess the underlying mechanism of neuropathic pain in these decades. Various molecules and neuronal events in the peripheral and central nervous systems involved in neuropathic pain have been evaluated. Recently, many pain researchers have focused on non-neuronal cells which are thought to be involved in development of neuropathic pain. Glial cells, fibroblasts, and various immune cells communicate with each other and contribute to persistent pain associated with peripheral nerve injury, and neuron and non-neuronal cell communication is highlighted as a critical mechanism in neuropathic pain. However, there are still many unknown mechanisms underlying persistent pain associated with peripheral nerve injury.
Basic research is essential to clarify the involvement of non-neuronal cells in neuropathic pain mechanisms to improve the treatments for neuropathic pain patients. In the current special issue for IJMS, we focused on the role of neuron and non-neuronal cell communication and its molecular mechanisms underlying neuropathic pain. We will accept broad areas of research papers, including physiology, neuroscience, and molecular biology regarding non-neuronal cells involved in neuropathic pain.
