Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We invite submissions to a Special Issue of the journal Energies on the topic “Winding Design of Electrical machines”.

The rapid development of electric propulsion for vehicles, ships, and aircraft requires the improvement of electrical machine performance in terms of dynamics, efficiency, high-power density, and the restraint of volume size. The actual trend in electrical machine design is focused on the use of high-speed electrical machines. In this way, the size and weight of the machine are reduced, but a great attention must be paid to the reduction of iron losses and skin effect losses.

Therefore, it is necessary to tackle several major challenges in the design of novel efficient cooling methods; many research efforts are inherent to the reduction of cooling system weight and the increase of its reliability. The types of material used for the conductors and insulation and the different winding arrangements able to provide a reduction of skin and proximity effect in the conductor have an important role in addressing the desired performance of electrical machines.

The aim of this Special Issue is to collect original papers regarding recent innovation in the design of winding of electrical machines. The area of interest of this Special Issue includes but is not limited to the following topics:

  • New type of winding arrangements;
  • New cooling system for windings;
  • New material for conductors and insulation;
  • Thermal model for windings;
  • Automatic manufacturing of windings;
  • Optimization procedures for windings design;
  • Finite element methods applied to winding analysis.

Interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines with hairpin windings have attracted significant attention in EV applications owing to their low DC resistance and excellent thermal capabilities. In this paper, we present a comprehensive investigation of AC winding losses in IPM machines for traction applications, including analytical modeling, the influence of design parameters, and finite element (FE) verification. The proposed analytical model can predict the trends in AC winding losses for any number of bar conductors and slot/pole combinations. The results of the parametric study, obtained via the analytical model, are presented to examine the effects of key design parameters, such as conductor width and height, phase arrangement, and slot-per-pole-per-phase (SPP). To incorporate more practical issues into the analysis of IPM machines with hairpin windings, extensive FE simulations were conducted. The results indicated that the AC winding losses decrease with an increasing number of conductor layers and phases inside the slot. Full article
