Dear Colleagues,
Sustainable development is seriously affected by the environmental impacts associated with human activities and the progressive exhaustion of fossil fuel resources, which are further aggravated by the recent worsening of the geopolitical situation in some oil and gas exporting countries. Without global political strategies and effective technological measures in place to face this situation, the future of subsequent generations could be put at risk. Significant portions of the huge amount of waste that is produced every year by industrial and human activities across the globe are often not treated or are inadequately treated before disposal, ignoring the fact that waste is a precious source of alternative energy. Therefore, technologies that are capable of combining the environmental and energy production aspects of waste disposal must be further developed.
As its title suggests, the aim of this Special Issue of the international journal Energies (IF = 3.2) is to provide an overview of the Green Technologies that are currently being utilized within the ongoing Energy Transition, including the treatment of different types of waste and their co-products (biomass, industrial, urban and agro-industrial wastes, etc.) as well as the possibility of recycling these resources and/or recovering energy from them. Special attention is also devoted to creating innovative technologies for energy production and/or saving as well as new strategies to reduce the impact of energy production on the environment, including, but not limited to, (a) Gas-to-Power technologies, i.e., highly efficient and environmentally friendly energy production using fuel cells; (b) Power-to-Gas technologies, i.e., the production of hydrogen or other fuels using electrolytic cells; (c) the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions through the use of microalgae or systems in which the two previous technological categories are combined with traditional systems and/or renewable energy sources; (d) traditional waste treatments including biogas production, soil remediation, gasification and pyrolysis; (e) new biorefinery approaches; and (f) renewable energy generation.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
