Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Phototrophic biofilms are typically comprised of biogeochemically interlinked communities of autotrophs and heterotrophs held within a self-generated matrix of exopolymeric substances. Phototrophic biofilms constitute surface-attached consortia and represent the predominant microbial lifestyle in a great variety of interfacial habitats in lentic and lotic systems, ocean beds, even under extreme conditions including estuarine mudflats and hotsprings. Phototrophic biofilms also play a key role in overall carbon dynamics and nutrient cycling with important implications for aquatic biogeochemistry, whereas their overgrowth on artificial surfaces of water suppliers, ship hulls, and industrial settings is responsible of micro-biofouling. Biofilm organisms can also proliferate on plastic debris developing in highly specialized communities, where they might be vectors of potential pathogenic bacteria, harmful algae, and persistent organic pollutants. Biotechnology is recently focusing on intensive cultivation of biofilms in specific photobioreactors for wastewater treatment and commercial applications. Although in the last two decades phototrophic biofilm studies have provided insights in biofilm structure and functioning, the diversity, the interactions among functional groups, the main drivers of biofilm dynamics continue to puzzle researchers.

We would like to generate an update of aquatic phototrophic biofilm knowledge by collecting recent contributions either derived from biofilm applications and control investigations, or provided through a modern analytical approach on their diversity and functioning, also in the context of biofouling and plastic pollution impacts.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Diversity is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
