Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce a forthcoming Special Issue titled “Applications of Biochar in Environmental Remediation: Insights and Innovations” in the esteemed journal, Catalysts. This Special Issue aims to showcase the latest advancements in, innovative approaches to, and practical applications of biochar in the field of environmental remediation.

Biochar, a carbon-rich material produced through the pyrolysis of biomass, has gained significant attention in recent years for its potential to address various environmental challenges. Its unique properties, such as a high surface area, porosity, and functional groups, make it an effective adsorbent for pollutants and a promising agent for soil and water remediation.

We invite contributions that explore the multifaceted role of biochar in environmental remediation, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Advancements in Biochar Production: Studies focusing on innovative techniques for biochar production, the optimization of pyrolysis conditions, and the development of novel feedstocks.
  • Mechanisms of Pollutant Removal: Research elucidating the mechanisms by which biochar adsorbs or transforms pollutants in soil, water, and air, including heavy metals, organic contaminants, and greenhouse gases.
  • Biochar-Enhanced Soil Remediation: Investigations into applications of biochar for soil amendment, its impact on soil health and fertility, and its role in mitigating soil pollution.
  • Water and Solid Treatment Solutions: Studies on the use of biochar in water and solid treatment processes, including the removal of contaminants, improvement of water quality, and enhancement of anaerobic digestion, as well as its integration into existing treatment systems.
  • Innovative Applications and Technologies: Papers that explore novel applications of biochar in environmental remediation, such as its use in constructed wetlands or biofiltration systems, or as a component in sustainable agricultural practices.

We welcome original research articles and short communications that contribute to the understanding and advancement of biochar applications in environmental remediation. Submissions should highlight the innovative aspects of the research, potential practical implications, and directions for future study.

We look forward to receiving your contributions and to advancing our knowledge on applications of biochar in environmental remediation.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Catalysts is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
