Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Neurodegenerative diseases remain enigmatic despite decades of research and studies. So far, the main focus has been on the role of different proteins and their functional changes in the context of the degeneration of cells. While proteostasis, inflammation, ER stress, and other cellular processes are involved in the reduction in cellular survival that eventually leads to cellular demise, the dynamics of the changes in proteins might be too slow to give sufficient information about the cellular degeneration. Therefore, in recent years, the attention has turned towards RNA-based biomarkers and RNA-based studies to understand the complex pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. The development of RNA sequencing and the improvement of the procedures for RNA-based analysis has substantially increased the number of studies dedicated to RNA-based research in the context of the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Using RNA as a primary endpoint in genomics has many advantages. First, RNA is the first product formed from the DNA, and many mutations should have their impact at this level, such as alternative splicing, exon skipping, and gene expression level differences, to give some examples. Second, RNA is easy to collect and store and the protocols are standard between different labs. Therefore, the sample numbers can be quite high. Finally, most of the RNA is never translated into proteins; therefore, the impact of the genetic variation is not expressed at the protein level. This Special Issue of the journal is dedicated to gene expression studies on neurodegenerative diseases.
